Not sure what happened, but the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship seems to have lost some of its luster this year.
The easy explanation as to why would be the invite list. With so many online qualifiers and random pros, there just wasn’t the same buzz or excitement this year compared to the past three years we’ve covered it. In fact, RawVegas.tv was the only so-called “media” outlet actually doing vid interviews.
So some quick suggestions to fix this moving forward: 1) Invite more celebs. This is a made-for-TV event, so get more TV personalities there. And stop regurgitating the same people. More celebs play poker than just Don Cheadle and Orel Hershiser. 2) Invite more high-stakes online guys. Playing heads-up for lots of money is what guys like Luke Schwartz, Ziigmund, and Brian Townsend do. They’ll mix up the action and create better, more exciting match-ups. Which means… 3) Less online qualifiers. Seriously who cares.
That’s it. Pretty simple.
Some interview highlights from above and after the jump: Joe Cada discussing how many girls he’s slept with since winning the WSOP Main Event (kid handles himself well…), Vanessa Rousso explaining Chad Brown‘s non-inclusion to the field this year (he won this event three years ago and isn’t invited this year…but Greg Raymer still gets in???), Jennifer Tilly talks about showing cleave, and Don Cheadle gives his Oscar picks.
