I was looking for easy and nice fix. I have been meaning to ask this question for months. Big changes and I need help! I would paint the frame with chalk paint and decoupage family photos on the underside of the glass. I would use a piece of wood, plywood, or perhaps particle board to support the tiles, but perhaps someone else will have a better idea. 
The tile was too thick and made the whole top higher than the rest which caused things to that were slid or moved over to fall or lean.
