Peter Eastgate Retires From Poker, Won’t Play Main Event

Watch Peter Eastgate Has Had Better Days on

Smart kid, that Peter Eastgate.

The 2008 WSOP champ announced on Tuesday that he is walking away from poker and will not play this year’s Main Event. So he won’t endure any more days like in the above vid.

Copy+paste from the PokerStars blog:

“When I started playing poker for a living, it was never my goal to spend the rest of my life as a professional poker player. My goal was to become financially independent. I achieved that by winning the WSOP Main Event in 2008. The period following has taken me on a worldwide tour, where I have seen some amazing places and met many new people; it has been a great experience. In the 20 months following my WSOP win, I feel that I have lost my motivation for playing high level poker along the way and I have decided that now is the time to find out what I want to do with the rest of my life. What this will be, I do not yet know. I have decided to take a break from live tournament poker, and try to focus on Peter Eastgate, the person. I want to thank PokerStars, my friends and family for their support over the last 20 months and for their support in my decision to take a break from poker.”

Eastgate joins Paul Phillips as the only major pro to basically get out of poker as a winning player.

I am surprised that he did not wait to do this until after the Main Event. In any event, I give the guy credit and I have to say that he represented himself well both on and off the felt after he won. I wish him luck, and hope he doesn’t decide that he misses the spotlight someday.

I think it’s really interesting that Eastgate has decided to quit or at least take an extended break. What I find way more interesting is that every article, blog post, comment, forum thread has been positive that I have read. A lot of what I have read almost reads like, good for Eastgate, he made it out. He went through the double doors and kept on walking.

So I think it’s the movie California Split, I could be wrong and maybe even mixing two movies together but I think this will do to make my point or lack there of. Anyhow, these two guys are playing in So. Cal card rooms looking to hit it big. Their ultimate goal is to make a $1 million. This movie has to be like 30+ years old so that’s a shit load of money. Eventually they make their way to Vegas and finally make the big score playing craps. They have made their million. So they are walking out of the casino with a duffle bag of money. They open up the double doors of say Caesars or the Stardust and the sun is shining and they look at each other. They have accomplished everything they have set out to accomplish. The journey is over and they are now on easy street. While looking at each the finality of it all hits them. So what do you think they do. They smile at each other turn around and head right back in.

certainly like your web-site but you need to check the spelling on several of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling problems and I find it very troublesome to inform the truth however I’ll definitely come back again.
