Derek Kelly, the former chairman of the Gutshot poker club, lost his appeal on Friday after the Court of Appeal in London ruled that poker is predominantly a game of chance and not skill.
A jury last year found Kelly guilty of breaching the 1968 Gaming Act for illegally charging a levy on winnings and for charging a fee to take part in poker games. Kelly argued that he didn’t need a license under the Act because poker was more akin to bridge and chess than games of chance like blackjack or roulette.
