How To Fix the WSOP Ratings Problem

Let's just say it's going to take more than a couple of pretty faces to turn the WSOP ratings arrow north again.

There’s been a lot of discussion recently [started by us] about what the WSOP / ESPN can do to bump its stagnate at best–declining at worst– ratings.

We spoke to Ty Stewart on our last podcast (listen here) and on This Week in Poker (watch here) on the topic. And we created the #wsopneedsto twitter discussion for your suggestions (of which there were plenty of good ones).

Based on conversations we’ve had amongst ourselves, with “industry types,” and from your suggestions, we’ve compiled a few ideas to get WSOP ratings back up and reach the mass audience while getting the current audience more invested.

While these aren’t all of the ideas we have / where presented, it’s a good starting point. Plenty more below the fold.

1. Stop cutting costs, which means cut the Main Event. The vast majority of WSOP coverage on ESPN is now dedicated to the Main Event. Makes sense to a degree: it spans two weeks where most tourneys last 3-4 days. It also cuts production costs. By dedicating the bulk of programming hours to one event as opposed to spreading it out over the entire 6 weeks of the WSOP, while we’re no math majors, we do realize this saves money.

However, the drawback to this is there are now 32! episodes of the Main Event, and quantity is trumping quality.

Sigla Candio! Viva Italia!

If you listened to our podcast yesterday, you’d know that we are now firmly in the “We hope Filippo Candio makes heads-up/wins the 2010 WSOP Main Event” camp.

Why?

Because (with apologies to Jess Welman, who first brought it up), he acts like the above when good things happen.

This is good, right?

Who doesn’t love a wacky Italian?

In related news, Filippo Candio has doubled up through Jonathan Duhamel, and is now third in chips with around 30M. Duhamel, who is still chip leader, is now down to around 51M.

In further related news, Lady Luck didn’t know what the fuck to do with Candio and Duhamel both all-in in a pot. Her head practically exploded.

2010 WSOP Main Event Continues On ESPN Tonight

Ass Girl 2

Before she was Ass Girl 2 she was just another Girl on the Rail on Day 1C of the 2010 WSOP Main Event

Day 1C and 1D of the 2010 WSOP Main Event air tonight on ESPN at 8pm EST/5pm PST, just moments after our show This Week In Poker broadcasts live online at 4pm PST with guests Prahlad Friedman and poker tells expert Joe Navarro.

A lot of big name pros played on the final Day 1s including Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Doyle BrunsonPatrik Antonius, Huck Seed, TomDurrrr” DwanDavid Williams (and his girlfriend), Hoyt Corkins, the aformentioned Prahlad Friedman, and Vanessa Ruosso, a woman, who went to Duke.

Expect to see a lot of Hellmuth (and his entrance), along with focus on Johnny Chan, who ends up one of the chipleaders heading into Day 2. We also won’t be surprised if ESPN shows a little love to Lauren Kling, a woman, and FOWCP Jason Calacanis knocking out John Juanda.

Who you won’t see is 2008 WSOP Main Event champ Peter Eastgate who announced his retirement from poker right around then.

Photos from Day 1C and 1D here. Photos of Ass Girl 2 here, here and here.

2010 WSOP Main Event Begins On ESPN Tonight

 Rachel Nordtømme

Rachel Nordtømme's presence on the rail during Day 1A was one for the ages.

Days 1A & 1B of the 2010 WSOP Main Event airs tonight (Tuesday) on ESPN, starting at 8pm EST/5pm PST.

Expect to see a lot of Mike “The Mouth” Matusow as he was at the featured table on Day 1A. 2003 WSOP Main Event champ Chris Moneymaker should also garner some attention as he ends the day among the leaders. Same goes with eventual November Niner and Poker Players Championship winner Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi.

Past Last Woman StandingTM winners and Amazing Race contestants Maria Ho and  Tiffany Michelle should also get some face time after missing last year’s Main Event because of the aforementioned Amazing Race. Some of the celebs on Day 1A who you’ll likely see include  David Alan GrierRay Romano, NBA star Shawn Marion and Playboy Playmate Sara Underwood.

In the Girls on the Rail department, Day 1A got off to a stellar start with Rachel Nordtømme showing up on the rail to watch her boyfriend Petter Northug. If the ridiculous amounts of daily hits we’re still getting to this post from the land of people who sound like deaf aliens when they talk is any indication, ESPN would be wise to focus on her during the broadcast.

Day 1B didn’t have as many big names but it did have Poor Man’s Patrik Antonius, so it had that going for it.

For more on the first two days of the 2010 WSOP Main Event, check out our Day 1A recap here and Day 1B recap here. Our 2010 WSOP Main Event Girls on the Rail here.
