Groupe Bernard Tapie Claims Pros Won’t Repay Tilt Debts

Zee bus? Oui oui I'll throw you under it.

In an exclusive interview with PokerStrategy.com, a lawyer for Groupe Bernard Tapie stated the company’s potential acquisition of Full Tilt Poker was in “serious jeopardy” in part due to unpaid debts from a number of high-profile pros.

As GBT lawyer Behn Dayanim explained to PokerStrategy:

GBT doesn’t want to acquire assets which will need to be litigated over later. In total, the sum owed to the company is between $10 and $20 million.

Pros named as debtors include Phil Ivey, Erick Lindgren, Layne Flack, David Benyamine, Barry Greenstein, and Mike Matusow.

The only pros to respond so far–and the only one we anticipate to respond–was Barry Greenstein via this post on 2+2. In it, Greenstein admits to borrowing “$400,000 to play on Full Tilt a few years ago, before PokerStars had high stakes games.” He also published an excerpt of a letter he issued to GBT in which he states in some murky logic that:

The consensus in the poker community is that all money owed to Full Tilt or taken by investors after the company became insolvent should be used to pay back player’s funds. If I were to make a deal with you it would look like I had turned my back on the best interests of the American players.

All in all, the statement by GBT left us scratching our heads. There was nothing positive that could possibly come from it. Yes, if pros owe the company money, it should be repaid. But publicly outing the debtors–and having the (de) gall to claim that non-payment puts the acquisition in jeopardy, is highly irresponsible at best or (more likely) a flat-out lie at worst.

For specific reasons as to why we believe GBT made this announcement, plus our analysis of what the GBT statement could really mean, go to Wicked Chops Insider here.

2009 Poker Hall of Fame nominee Daniel Negreanu along with 2009 Girls on the Rail Hall of Fame nominee Brittany Bowman

Time to stoke up the whole “Is Phil Ivey to young to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame?” debate once more.

The Poker Hall of Fame has narrowed its list of nominees for the 2009 Class down to nine players. They are (age in parentheses):

BARRY GREENSTEIN (54)
DAN HARRINGTON (63)
PHIL IVEY (33)
TOM McEVOY (64)
MEN NGUYEN (55)
SCOTTY NGUYEN (46)
DANIEL NEGREANU (35)
ERIK SEIDEL (49)
MIKE SEXTON (61)

Absent from the list is 23-year-old Tom Dwan, who the Poker Hall of Fame Governing Council remarked:

“With all due respect to Mr. Dwan, one of the games most exciting young players, he does not currently meet the criteria for Hall of Fame selection. We wish him well and expect he will again be considered once he has ‘stood the test of time.’”

The 15 living Hall of Fame members and a 15-member Media Panel have until October 2 to cast their votes. An induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Rio during the dinner break of the 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table.

Check out the criteria for the Poker Hall of Fame here. List who you’d vote for and why in the comments below.

For who Daniel Negreanu thinks should be inducted, go here.

2009 WSOP Update: Team Steindro Cruising As Greenstein Leads Event #47

Barry Greenstein is the current chipleader in Event No. 47 at the 2009 WSOP

Twitter's @BarryGreenstein is the current chipleader in Event No. 47 at the 2009 WSOP.

If Jeffrey Lisandro winning his third bracelet of the 2009 WSOP didn’t all but seal the deal–and it all but did–for Team SteindroTM in their POY points prop bet against Daniel Negreanu and Erick Lindgren, Team SteindroTM‘s other half, Barry Greenstein, is looking to do so today in Event #47 ($2,500 Mixed Holdem) where he leads the final 16 players with 510,000 in chips.

Greenstein is guaranteed to boost his series total to at least 85 POY points after this event, and a win here would put him in a points tie with Negreanu (165). And with less than ten events remaining and Lindgren only earning 30 points so far and Lisandro way out ahead with 355, there’s really not much hope for Team LindgreanuTM.

In second behind Greenstein in Event #47 is the wildly marketable Hasan Habib (430,00), with John McGuinness (428,000) and Karlo Lopez (395,000) rounding out the top four. Among the other notables still in include Matt Matros (160,000), Ylon Schwartz (110,000), Allen Cunningham (75,000) and Mimi Tran, a woman (70,000).

Jeffrey Lisandro Wins Second 2009 WSOP Bracelet, Takes Prop Bet Lead

Farzad Rouhani (foreground) fought hard for the Event #37 title, however the battle eventually climaxed with Jeffrey Lisandro's second 2009 WSOP bracelet.

Jeffrey Lisandro won Event #37 ($10,000 7CS Hi/Lo) to claim his second gold bracelet of the 2009 WSOP.

While Lisandro banks $431,656 for the win, he stands to win even more by effectively putting one of the biggest prop bets of this year’s WSOP on ice. Barry Greenstein teamed with Lisandro to place his largest Player of the Year prop bet against Daniel Negreanu and Erick Lindgren. Team SteindroTM had a slight lead going into Event #37. Now after the win, Lisandro has tied for the lead in the POY race with Ville Wahlbeck, both tabbing 255 points. Negreanu is a full bracelet win behind with 165 points. Greenstein and Lindgren have been cashing a lot, but neither have gone very deep in an event, and have 35 and 20 points respectively. Both are still alive and stacked well however in the $10k PLO championship.

Lisandro defeated Farzad Rouhani ($266,804) heads-up for the title. Mike Wattel finished third ($176,605) and Doyle Brunson placed seventh ($62,234). Get full payouts here.
