Lex Veldhuis Defeats ElkY in MMA Match

Lex Veldhuis defeated Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier in their MMA stye match on Tuesday.

Because of the Tilt-Tapie deal looking like it’s done, we promised we’d stop publicly bashing the French, so this will be a short post.

The match ended in the second round, as Veldhuis landed two kicks to EklY’s head and knocked him out.

You can try to watch the fight above through some of the worst ever video footage ever recorded. According to Poker NewsSteven van Zadelhoff shot the film, apparently while operating a jackhammer.

FIGHT! ElkY, Lex Veldhuis to Have MMA Battle Next Week

One thing this Lex Veldhuis-ElkY fight could use to make it even more watchable: MMA ring girl Stephanie Ann Cook.

First, there was Gus Hansen vs Theo Jorgensen. Then, there was Liv Boeree vs Melissa Castello. And of course, there was the epic Jeff Madsen vs Blow-Up Beer Can tangle during the WSOP.

Now, poker awaits its latest battle: Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier vs Lex Veldhuis.

The MMA-style fight is set to take place November 22nd. According to Veldhuis’ blog, the fight will be 5 three-minute rounds and will not allow any head-butts, elbows (smart move) or kicks to the groin (smarter move).

ElkY has apparently been training for the fight for about two years. Regardless, Veldhuis thinks of himself as the favorite because (among other reasons) he has a year-and-a-half of boxing training, EklY is not a “natural athelete,” and also probably because ElkY, who is from France, is from France.

Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, Jason Somerville Win WSOP Bracelets

Hmmmm...see if you can figure out who backs Jason Somerville from the above photo. Just guess.

Two of the game’s most respected online grinders captured their first respective WSOP bracelets on Tuesday.

In Event #20 ($1,000 NLH), Jason Somerville beat a field of 3,175 to capture his first bracelet and bank $493,091. He defeated Yahar Darian ($305,009) heads-up for the title. This event had another near-miss with a woman winning a bracelet, as 46 year-old Diana Allen, a woman, finished seventh ($63,493). Crazy as shit Lex Veldhuis just missed the final table, finishing eleventh ($28,517).

Somerville joins Brian Rast in becoming the second PokerVT pro in a week to win a bracelet. Apparently there’s some Good JuJuTM for VT pros who appeared on This Week In Poker. In related news, we’re working on getting a TWiP-ish version of TWiP going again from the WSOP soon.

Get full Event #20 results here.

In Event #21 ($10,000 Seven Card Stud), Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier broke through and captured his first bracelet, banking $331,639. He defeated Steven Landfish ($204,924) heads-up for the title.

ElkY has proven to be far from a typical two-year wonder. This is ElkY’s ninth major cash of 2011 and third victory (he’s also won two EPT High Rollers events). The win gives him nearly $8M in career tournament earnings and over $1.6M for 2011. We’re having a difficult time computing all of this, as ElkY is French, yet, he’s so often victorious. He’s like the Michael Jordan in a country full of LeBron Jameses.

Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier Wins WSOP TOC Seat

If only the French army fought as hard as ElkY does...

Earlier today, nine people were invited to play a WSOP Academy single-table tournament with the winner receiving a free-bid into the WSOP Tournament of Champions.

The tournament concept itself–and the entrants, which only included one bracelet winner–were catching some heat from the so-called poker “media” and others–as “they” felt it more or less invalidated the purpose of having a Tournament of Champions where “one” needed a bracelet to qualify.

Unfortunately, the one bracelet winner, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, couldn’t pull out a victory heads-up against Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, voiding some of those complaints. Sooooo ElkY gets the seat. And there you have it.

In related news, we’ll announce our TOC winner tomorrow. Vote on the TOC here.

Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier Looking for Second EPT Title

Watch EPT 6 Barcelona: Welcome to Barcelona
Day 3 is underway at the EPT Barcelona, and Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier is among the big stacks.

ElkY first burst(?) onto the live poker scene by coming second in the EPT Copenhagen event in January 2007, then winning the EPT PokerStars Caribbean Adventure a year later. A win here would likely cement the Frenchman as the EPT equivalent of what Gus Hansen was to the WPT early on, and make him the unquestioned best French tournament circuit player today.

Fuck France.

Mike McDonald and Roland de Wolfe are also still alive. Lex Veldhuis was eliminated yesterday. Get full chip counts here.

In somewhat related news, the WPT Merit Cyprus Classic is on Day 1B. Follow here.

* The above video was posted out of sheer and utter laziness. Yeah, a picture of a hot Spanish chick would be cooler here, but it’s Labor Day, and we’re not working for another second.
