Card Players Announces SpadeClub, A Brilliant Idea for 2002

On the heels of the WPT’s recently launched ClubWPT.com, Card Player brings their SpadeClub to the poker world and says, "Hey, look at us! Over here! We’ve got the same idea six years too late too!"

According to Card Player, SpadeClub:

"…leads the way in enhancing online poker by adding additional features such as player profiles, exclusive tools and tips, and over $100,000 each month in cash prizes. Not only is SpadeClub unique for being the first online poker site developing a full-scale community, it also delivers a multitude of opportunity for players to risk nothing and win big."

Since it’s a subscription site, the SpadeClub operates under those loophole sweepstakes and promotions laws, meaning it’s legal in 35 U.S. American states.

In related news, Card Player plans to announce other revolutionary new products, including what they dub as "the remote control," a website that sells pet supplies (commercial below), a pill that helps 60 year old men get erections, and a subscription-based poker website.

Today’s Card Player “LIKE YOU WERE THERE” Moment

When we first entered the WSOP media room, we immediately noticed a slick four-page newsletter called Card Player Daily. In it, Card Player provides recapped news of the previous day’s events. Daily. (Note: It is also available to you online.)

"Wait, MORE Card Player enjoyment available to us on a daily basis? What, is this Christmas? Or as Jewish people like to call it, Hanukkah?" we thought.

So while these aren’t necessarily LYWTM’sTM in the traditional sense, the spirit of what a LYWTM is lives strongly in the headlines provided to describe Events #29 (won by John Gale) and #30 (that Madsen kid who hates everyone).

A Gale-Force Win:
John Gale Win [sic] Event #29

Youth v. [sic] Experience: Youth Wins
Jeff Madsen Wins Second Bracelet in Event #30

Today’s Card Player “LIKE YOU WERE THERE” Moment

Praise be to Allah that Card Player magazine has a top notch crew of writers assigned to cover the 2006 World Series of Poker with such riveting and captivating narrative. As we have said before, it’s just like you were there.

Allah akbar.

Nothing quite captures the essence of what it’s like to be smack dab in the middle of all the action, where the cards are tossed, chips are stacked and lives are forever changed like sporadic hand recounts every six or seven minutes, non-descript references to conversations that pros are having, and how many seat cushions Joe Hachem is sitting on.

Nothing.

That’s why it’s uber-important to have the singular media entity "allowed" to provide live coverage of WSOP events right there ready to capture all of the action so when that rare event that transcends our sport occurs, you know exactly what it was like to be there firsthand. Yes, we’re all lucky to have a trusted source that publishes updates every six or seven minutes to convey the magnitude of the moment of an event that will forever be etched into our collective poker fabric.

It’s really hard to imagine anyone articulating the gravity of the epic Hellmuth-Cabanillas duel better than this:

Published on: Friday Jul 07, 2006

Every once in a while a sports event achieves “you shoulda been there” status. When a television broadcast, an online article, or any other type of retelling can’t replace the experience of physically witnessing the action firsthand.

The final table of the $5,000 no-limit hold’em tournament achieved “you shoulda been there” status.

Today’s Card Player “LIKE YOU WERE THERE” Moment

Americanflag_1Ok. Wicked Chops Poker might’ve taken the 4th of July weekend off. We did this because we love America. And we still believe in America. We love and believe in America more than the guy at the beginning of GF1 who said "I believe in America" believes in America.

So it wouldn’t have been right to have worked that hard over the 4th of July weekend. Not if you love America. Not if you still believe in America.

Of course, if we were communists, well then sure, we probably would’ve worked our collective butts off this weekend. But we’re not communists.

Hammer_and_sickleFortunately, there are still hardcore communists like the communists over at Card Player magazine* who worked their hammer and sickles to the grindstone this weekend. And this is good, because lots of good poker was played, and somebody had to cover it ("live").

So fortunately for us and you, there was a treasure trove of beautiful put-you-in-the-middle-of-the-action-moments to choose from over the past few days. But we really feel the gem below best sums up everything you might’ve missed while you were grilling and chilling and singing yankee doodle dandy.

Joenamath_suzykolber But before we get to "the moment," we’ll keep you on the edge of your seats Moonlighting style and delay the big payoff for just un momento by saying this: "We are absolutelypositively100%sure that Card Player will have some sort of ‘The fireworks were really going off as action continued at the Rio…’ type write-up for today’s action, and when we find it, we will surely make it our next "moment." In fact, if you find a 4th of July/fireworks themed write-up, please make our lives a little easier by emailing the link to contact@wickedchopspoker.com. You are the best. We mean it. We really mean it. In fact, like Broadway Joe once said, "We want to kiss you/We really want to kiss you".

Big Time Table
Currently Mike Matusow, Mel Judah, David Chiu, and Marco Traniello are all sitting at the same table.  With all the experience spread throughout these players’ history, table talk consists of many legendary tournaments and events.  Most recently, Matusow was discussing his experience in the recent Tournament of Champions.

*Not really communists.

The Blogfiles: BJ Nemeth

Bj_nemeth_header

Intro: BJ Nemeth is working backwards.  Many serious bloggers launch their site, then get their dream gig writing for one of the pubs out there.  BJ already worked that “dream” gig, for Card Player magazine, no less, when he launched their live tournament blogging initiative. Now, free from the constraints of publication affiliation, BJ’s got his own blog up, providing his unedited insight and opinions to the poker community for the first time.

WCP: When did you get your poker blog up and running?

Bj_nemeth_2BJ: Using Apple’s iWeb software and my existing .Mac account, I put up the beginnings of my website in late April. I started by posting my online portfolio, compiling some of my work (articles and photos) from my time reporting for Card Player magazine. That let me get comfortable with the software for about a week, and start my site with more content than just a few blog posts. (I’m a big believer in the Ted Turner theory that "Content is king.")

The website was ready for primetime when I posted my first blog entry on Sunday, April 30, 2006. I wrote an introduction to my blog, which was basically my mission statement.

WCP: You were with Card Player for awhile right when the poker boom was taking off. How’d you get hooked up with them and what were your responsibilities?

BJ: When the 2004 World Series began, I was unemployed…
