WSOP Announces Made-for-TV Rematches of Heads-Up Battles

Payback is a bitch, Johnny Chan.

Have to hand it to the poker world for coming up with some innovative TV concepts recently.

It started last year with the PokerStars Big Game. Then last month, Full Tilt introduced the ONYX Cup. And today, the World Series of Poker announced a made-for-TV program pitting past Main Event heads-up matches against each other once again.

The first battle is between Chris Moneymaker and Sammy Farha. Recreating the 2003 WSOP Main Event final table, Moneymaker and Farha will compete in a best out of three rematch. Game one will have them compete with their same starting stacks. Game two will reverse the stacks. And game three will be at even stacks.

Then, the 1989 Main Event gets revisited, as Johnny Chan will go up against Phil Hellmuth in a single match with even stacks.

Finally, fans get to vote on a third (re)match between the following:

- Johnny Chan vs. Erik Seidel – i.e. the shoe-in
- Greg Raymer vs. David Williams
- Jamie Gold vs. Paul Wascika
- Duhamel vs. John Racener

The rematches will air on ESPN on July 26, 2011.

Read more about the rematches here. To vote [for Chan vs. Seidel] go to the WSOP Facebook page here.

Erik Seidel Wins 2011 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship

Moneymaker didn't stand a chance.

Erik Seidel defeated Chris Moneymaker on Sunday evening to capture the 2011 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship.

Seidel has bent the first three months of 2011 over and has completely owned it. He has a 4th in the PCA High Rollers; a 3rd in the Aussie Millions $100,000 buy-in; a win in the Aussie Millions Super High Rollers $250,000 buy-in; and another win at the LAPC High Rollers.

Now, Seidel banks another $750,000 for his NBC Heads-Up win, pushing his 2011 earnings over $4M. Seidel finished second in the NBC Heads-Up event last year to Annie Duke, a woman.

Moneymaker, Duhamel Among NBC Heads-Up Quarterfinalists

In an unprecedented move, we're picking the Frenchy to win it all.

The 2011 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship is down to its Elite EightTM.

It’s a pretty interesting remaining field with some good made-for-TV match-ups.

In the so-called “Clubs” bracket, the man many think will win this–Olivier ‘livb’ Busquet–takes on reigning WSOP champ Jonathan Duhamel. Despite being French-Canadian, Duhamel is earning the respect of industry types for an impressive, classy showing.

Busquet/Duhamel will take on the winner of the Chris Moneymaker vs. David Oppenheim match-up. Similar to Busquet, Oppenheim is a guy people just expect to go far and/or win the event. While we kind of feel like Moneymaker has maxed out his run here, obviously it’ll be Good for PokerTM to see him advance to the finals.

Over in the so-called “Hearts” bracket, last-second replacement pick Andrew Robl has made a quarterfinals and faces David Benyamine. The lower half of the bracket sees last year’s runner-up Erik Seidel square off against current Wicked Chops Poker Player of the Year, Vanessa Selbst.

We used to kill it on our predictions–so let’s throw some down on today’s match-ups:
Busquet defeats Duhamel
Oppenheim defeats Moneymaker
Robl defeats Benyamine
Seidel defeats Selbst

Busquet bests Oppenheim in the semis. Robl beats Seidel.

And in the finals, Busquet defeats Robl.

Did we really just pick the Frenchy? Yes, yes we did.

Ana Marquez, Chris Moneymaker Don’t Make 2011 PCA TV Final Table

This final table was almost really, really interesting.

Thud.

In a WPT-esque meltdown, Chris Moneymaker and Ana Marquez, a woman, exited the 2011 PCA Main Event in 11th and 10th place respectively, crushing what could’ve been a great TV final table.

Moneymaker banked $130,000 and Marquez $155,000 for their efforts.

So who were we left with? Chris Oliver (standard young online grinder, $1.2M in online earnings) is the overwhelming chip leader, stacked at 19,670,000. He’s followed by Galen Hall with 6,430,000.

Also still alive are Sam Stein (5,855,000) and Mike Sowers (3,685,000).

In related news, the $5,000 Bounty Shootout played its first heat. Notable winners include Brandon Adams, Jeff Madsen, Shaun Deeb, Faraz Jaka (of course), and both Binger brothers.

Ana Marquez, A Woman, Leads 2011 PCA Main Event

Ana Marquez, a woman, get this--leads the 2011 PCA Main Event.

Wait wait wait a minute. What’s going on at the 2011 PCA Main Event?

With 22 remaining, Ana Marquez, a woman, is chip leader, stacked at 3,805,000. If that’s not shocking enough, Chris Moneymaker is second overall with 3,765,000.

Let’s concentrate on the one without the penis first. Ana is a Spanish cutie who apparently used to date Mike Sowers and now is allegedly attached to Bryn Kenney. She has one career cash (at a Venetian Deepstack).

As for Moneymaker, well, you know. Namesake of the Moneymaker EffectTM, etc. etc.

Other notables remaining are the aforementioned Mike Sowers (3,180,000) and Sam Stein (3,085,000).
