WSOP Announces Made-for-TV Rematches of Heads-Up Battles

Payback is a bitch, Johnny Chan.

Have to hand it to the poker world for coming up with some innovative TV concepts recently.

It started last year with the PokerStars Big Game. Then last month, Full Tilt introduced the ONYX Cup. And today, the World Series of Poker announced a made-for-TV program pitting past Main Event heads-up matches against each other once again.

The first battle is between Chris Moneymaker and Sammy Farha. Recreating the 2003 WSOP Main Event final table, Moneymaker and Farha will compete in a best out of three rematch. Game one will have them compete with their same starting stacks. Game two will reverse the stacks. And game three will be at even stacks.

Then, the 1989 Main Event gets revisited, as Johnny Chan will go up against Phil Hellmuth in a single match with even stacks.

Finally, fans get to vote on a third (re)match between the following:

- Johnny Chan vs. Erik Seidel – i.e. the shoe-in
- Greg Raymer vs. David Williams
- Jamie Gold vs. Paul Wascika
- Duhamel vs. John Racener

The rematches will air on ESPN on July 26, 2011.

Read more about the rematches here. To vote [for Chan vs. Seidel] go to the WSOP Facebook page here.

Erik Seidel Wins 2011 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship

Moneymaker didn't stand a chance.

Erik Seidel defeated Chris Moneymaker on Sunday evening to capture the 2011 NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship.

Seidel has bent the first three months of 2011 over and has completely owned it. He has a 4th in the PCA High Rollers; a 3rd in the Aussie Millions $100,000 buy-in; a win in the Aussie Millions Super High Rollers $250,000 buy-in; and another win at the LAPC High Rollers.

Now, Seidel banks another $750,000 for his NBC Heads-Up win, pushing his 2011 earnings over $4M. Seidel finished second in the NBC Heads-Up event last year to Annie Duke, a woman.

Wicked Chops Podcast with Erik Seidel

Will Rounders 2 do Erik Seidel a solid, and, you know, show he had the way better career than Johnny Chan the master?

No This Week in Poker yesterday, so instead we did a very TWiP-ish episode of our Wicked Chops Podcast.

Joining us (and taking your q’s) on the podcast is the man who is absolutely knocking 2011 upside the head, Erik Seidel. He talks music, Rounders 2, and of course, the $3.5M-ish he’s won over the past 30 days.

Jess Welman covers poker headlines and bashes Norm MacDonald. Sorry Jess, he’s no Paula Poundstone.

Listen below or download it on iTunes.

2011 Aussie Millions: Erik Seidel Wins Super High Rollers; Moorman Leads Main Event

Eff you, Johnny Chan.

It’s been a sick start of the year for Erik Seidel.

Not even in 30 days into the calendar, Seidel has laid waste to competition in high rollers events.

Along with a third place finish in the PCA PLO 8-max event ($46,560), Seidel finished fourth in the PCA High Rollers ($295,960) and third in the Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge ($523,881).

Now, Seidel has captured the biggest buy-in event in poker tournament history–the 2011 Aussie Millions $250,000 Super High Rollers. For the win, Seidel banks $2.5M AUD and moves into third place (past Jamie Gold) on the all-time career money winners list (Johnny Chan is still 34th at $6.1M, just sayin’…).

Sam Trickett followed his Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge victory with a runner-up to Seidel, earning himself another $1.4M AUD. David Benyamine finished third for $1.1M AUD.

In related news, only 18 remain in the 2011 Aussie Millions Main Event. It’s a pretty stacked field, with Chris Moorman leading at 1,643,000. He’s followed by Australian Mark Vos, a ginger, with 1,200,000. Other notables remaining include Sorel Mizzi (965,000) and Patrik Antonius (958,000).

Erick Lindgren and Howard Lederer were eliminated in 33rd and 34th place respectively ($30,000 AUD).

Sam Trickett Wins Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge

Not on hand to see Sam Trickett's win? Australian model Miranda Kerr, who just had a baby, which means she'll never look as good as this again.

Seems like there’s a lot of $1M+ prizes lately, right?

Twenty-four year-old Brit Sam Trickett is the latest million-plus winner, taking down the 2011 Aussie Millions $100,000 Challenge.

Trickett outlasted a field of 38 to bank $1,525,000 AUD ($1,507,000 USD). Over the past 12 months, Trickett has quietly put together an amazing run, pushing his earnings during that span over $2.5M.

Tony Bloom finished second ($975,000 AUD) and Erik Seidel came in third ($625,000 AUD). For those keeping track at home, the third place finish gives Seidel over $10M now in career tournament earnings. Or about $4M more than Johnny Chan. Just sayin’.
