#WSOPneedsto _________?

Rachel Nordtomme WSOP

Some may argue the #WSOPneedsto show more Rachel Nordtomme (above) during its broadcast.

We’ll be posting later today what we think the WSOP needs to do to get its ratings back up. Until then though we’ve been asking people on Twitter and Facebook to share their thoughts on why viewership continues to drop and what can be done to improve its broadcast.

So far lots of interesting thoughts/ideas. And some funny ones.

2010 WSOP Main Event Continues On ESPN Tonight

Ass Girl 2

Before she was Ass Girl 2 she was just another Girl on the Rail on Day 1C of the 2010 WSOP Main Event

Day 1C and 1D of the 2010 WSOP Main Event air tonight on ESPN at 8pm EST/5pm PST, just moments after our show This Week In Poker broadcasts live online at 4pm PST with guests Prahlad Friedman and poker tells expert Joe Navarro.

A lot of big name pros played on the final Day 1s including Phil Hellmuth, Daniel Negreanu, Doyle BrunsonPatrik Antonius, Huck Seed, TomDurrrr” DwanDavid Williams (and his girlfriend), Hoyt Corkins, the aformentioned Prahlad Friedman, and Vanessa Ruosso, a woman, who went to Duke.

Expect to see a lot of Hellmuth (and his entrance), along with focus on Johnny Chan, who ends up one of the chipleaders heading into Day 2. We also won’t be surprised if ESPN shows a little love to Lauren Kling, a woman, and FOWCP Jason Calacanis knocking out John Juanda.

Who you won’t see is 2008 WSOP Main Event champ Peter Eastgate who announced his retirement from poker right around then.

2010 WSOP Tournament Of Champions Airs On ESPN Tonight

Huck Seed TOC

SPOILER ALERT: Don't look at the photo above of 2010 WSOP TOC winner Huck Seed if you don't want to know who won the 2010 WSOP TOC.

The final table of the 2010 WSOP Tournament of Champions airs tonight on ESPN at 8pm EST/5pm PST.

ESPN has to be pretty happy with how its 2010 WSOP broadcast is starting off, especially after last year’s dismal first two episodes that included a ratings-dampening final table in the $40,000 buy-in event and an “absolute fucking worst-case scenario” final three players (McEvoy, Varkonyi, Harrington) in the Champions Invitational.

This year though, the $50,000 Poker Players Championship delivered big name pros and a couple of solid story lines, like the Mizrachi brothers, that was good enough to give ESPN a 15% increase in ratings over last year’s first show. And tonight, you have to think even more will tune in to watch the Tournament of Champions.

The All-Star-like, Made for TVTM tournament, which WSOP VP Ty Stewart brought back after a three year hiatus, produced a solid, mainstream-poker-fan-friendly final nine of Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein, Annie Duke, a woman, Howard LedererJohnny Chan, Joe HachemHuck Seed, Jennifer Harman, a woman and T.J. Cloutier. As ESPN points out in its preview (below), the nine combine for 41 WSOP bracelets and over $32 million in winnings. Impressive stuff. Expect to see ESPN focus once again on the brother-sister angle of Lederer and Duke, like they did back during the 2004 TOC, as well as Johnny Chan finally coming close to winning something big again. Also, expect to see “Salty” Joe Hachem acting salty.

Of note, as WSOP VP TY Stewart told us in this video (about 1:22:00 in), next year’s TOC final table will likely be scheduled around the November Nine broadcast.

Preview from tonight’s second episode below. Reread our write-up on the event here.

ESPN to Live Stream 2010 WSOP Events on ESPN3

gotr-1-1

Will the rails be visible on the ESPN live stream? Or just RW3 (foreground)?

In a chat this afternoon for ESPN Poker, FOWCP Andrew Feldman announced that ESPN would be live streaming select events from the 2010 WSOP. Here’s his quote from the chat:

ESPN3 will be bringing you five final table streamed live from the 2010 World Series of Poker. The events we’ll be streaming are: $25K six-handed on July 3, $2,500 no-limit hold ‘em on June 26, $1,500 on June 27, $1,500 on June 30, $3,000 triple chance on July 1.

While there are scant few details at the moment as to what this will entail, one of two things would have to happen for the live streaming to comply with Nevada Gaming Commission regulations. Either 1) they will not show hole cards or 2) it will have a delay, making it more “live” than live.

The subject of live streaming the Main Event final table still seems to be up in the air as Feldman was only able to confirm these preliminary events in the chat. When asked about the ME final table, he responded:

Actually, as of now, I have no idea about the answer to that question. I’m assuming that if we decide to air it live, we’ll make some sort of announcement late summer. The five that we’re airing are the preliminary events of the WSOP…sorry for the lack of info.

Developing…
