Gavin Smith, Captain POB Among WSOP-C Tunica Day 1 Survivors

Gavin-smith

Stating the obvious (again) here, but these WSOP Circuit events aren't what they used to be.

Back when the WSOP-C's began, ESPN cameras followed. Top pros played in them. Winning one had at least a little bit of prestige.

Now, not so much.

The first WSOP-C stop of 2009 kicked off yesterday at Harrah's Tunica. $5k entry, 154 entrants.

Like the movie The Fast and the Furious, play was fast and furiousTM (man we haven't used that one in a long time…feels good), as only 27 remained by the end of Day 1. David Dao will enter Day 2 as the chip leader, stacked at 291,700. Online pro Matt 'Allinat420' Stout is second with 255,500.

Other notables remaining include Gavin Smith, "Captain POB" Tom Franklin, Jordan Morgan, and Kathy Liebert, a woman.

All In: The Poker Musical Announced, Told You We Weren’t Making This Sh*t Up

All In Poker Musical presented by WSOP and Phil HellmuthWhen we first broke the news yesterday that Phil Hellmuth and the WSOP we’re doing a poker musical called “All In: The Poker Musical,” no one really believed it, with people on the WCP forum and other forums immediately calling it a level. Or at least hoping it was.

Well, like we said, you can’t make shit like this up.

Just minutes ago, Harrahs and the WSOP officially sent out the press release for what is being billed as the world’s first poker musical, which will debut during the WSOP Main Event on July 3, with shows open to the public on July 4 and 5 at the Rio.

Check out the full press release here.

Talk it up on the WCP forum here.

Harrah’s to Open WSOP Branded Store in Las Vegas, Inks Deal with Major League Merch Company

WSOP merchandiseThe World Series of Poker is set to announce later today that it plans to open an Official World Series of Poker retail store in Vegas in the near future. Scouting for the location is currently underway. Unfortunately tearing down Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar & Grill isn’t being considered.

The new Las Vegas store announcement is tied to a deal the WSOP has inked with major league merchandise company XP Events to manage the WSOP’s online store and all of its officially-licensed retail shops in Vegas during the series, in addition to the new brick-and-mortar shop.

XP has managed merch sales for the NBA and NHL All-Star games, the World Baseball Classic, the President’s Cup, and the Tour de France. XP Events also runs retail shops for the Phoenix Suns, Arizona Diamondbacks and the Florida Panthers.

According to Harrah’s, the official WSOP online store (wsopshop.com or is it shopwsop.com?) will be re-launched this Thursday, May 15, with a wide range of new WSOP products and “an exciting, user-friendly shopping experience.” So we’re guessing you won’t have to wait 117 days for your order to be fulfilled.

2008 World Series of Poker Open for Pre-Registration

Phil Hellmuth will be looking to up his 11 WSOP bracelets at the 2008 World Series of Poker
Harrah’s Entertainment announced that it has officially opened pre-registration for the 2008 World Series of Poker with
poker players now able to secure their spots at this year’s WSOP by visiting WorldSeriesofPoker.com. Once there, they are instructed to download a form, fill it out and then mail or fax it to the Rio because it’s the year 1989 and submitting a form online hasn’t been invented yet.

To make payment, players have the option to mail in a cashiers check or wire money per instructions provided on the site. Players can also register in person at the main cage of the Rio using cash or chips.

As far as third-party payments go, Harrah’s rules dictate that only those approved by corporate sponsorship and licensing will be accepted. Unless approved, the player’s name must match the remitter’s name.

In news to us, although we’re sure it’s been mentioned elsewhere, WSOP tournament director Jack Effel says in the press release that “no alternates will be seated at the 2008 WSOP,” likely as a way to get people to sign up early and put an end to the fiasco that saw WCP entities Snake and Chops two of 800 alternates in Event No. 3 last year. That means events with just one starting day will be capped at 2,760 players. Event No. 3 last year had 2,998.

Both the form and deposit must be submitted to the Rio at least two weeks before the start of the event.

The 2008 WSOP will run from May 30 through July 16, 2008, and will include 55 bracelet tournaments.

Finally, Big Money US Gaming Operators Putting Pressure On Congress To Regulate Online Poker

CapitalAccording to Bloomberg.com, MGM, Harrah’s and other US casino operators are stepping up their efforts to have Congress legalize online gambling.

Just as Wicked Chops Poker has stated over and over again, the gaming operators are finally pressing Congress to keep the $12 billion online wagering business on US soil by legalizing, regulating and taxing it.

Some legislators are starting to see the light. Senator John Ensign (R-NV) said, “The argument the industry is making is, if it is being done offshore, why not bring it in to the U.S. so it can be regulated?… It doesn’t look like you can ban it.”

As Michael Bolcerek, head of the PPA, stated in our heads-up interview with him recently, much of the push to ban online gaming in the US has come from the Jack Abramoff backlash. Representative Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) has made significant progress in pushing through his legislation, which looks to amend the 1961 Wire Act so it includes online gambling. However, according to the Bloomberg.com article, Matthew Gerard, a gaming industry analyst at Investec Securities in London, says, “Ultimately, we think it will be very, very difficult to get any prohibitive legislation through the Senate.”

The casinos, through their lobbying organization (the American Gaming Association), are in the process of conducting a study to determine if “legalization, regulation and taxation of online gambling would reduce the risk of fraud and abuse and increase government revenue.” Regardless of the findings, the association still projects that the online gambling revenues will double to “about $24 billion a year in global revenue by 2010.”
