2008 WSOP Update: $50K Buy-In HORSE Event Underway

Chad Brown (above, headphones) at the tail end of the first level of the $50k HORSE event.

Saddle up!

The HORSE event at the 2008 World Series of Poker got out of the gate off to a galloping quick start tonight with a stable field of 146 players who ponied up paid the $50k buy-in to compete for what is now the most coveted title in poker.

Poker stallion great Gus Hansen has grabbed the reins taken charge early to amass the chip lead.

Last year’s champ, the Shetland-sized half-man, half-amazing Freddy Deeb is currently second in chips.

Also doing well just after the first break are a few young foals guns, including James Mackey, a ginger, and Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond.

Filly Female player Isabelle Mercier is among the top twenty, while Annie Duke, a mare woman, was off to a good start as well but has fallen back to 100k in chips.

Surprisingly a no show is a lame stud not-feeling-well Patrik Antonius.

UPDATE: PA showed up during second level.

2008 WSOP Update: Event No. 22 – $3K Buy-In H.O.R.S.E. Underway

Poker pro Chad Brown is the guy with headphones

It’s a pro heavy field in today’s $3k buy-in HORSE event at the 2008 WSOP, and we’re not just saying that because David Benyamine and Greg Raymer are playing. Like any tournament that involves anything but just Hold’em, tonight’s HORSE event has drawn a who’s who of big name pros … way too lazy many to be named.

We’re picking Chad Brown (photo above) as our early favorite, because he’s a solid all-around player and our photog snapped the great shot of him above before he busted in the $5k NLHE event. He’s the one wearing headphones for those who don’t follow poker and may not recognize him.

Early chip leaders in the tournament include Allen Kessler, who, as a side not, really needs to lay off the Facebook crack, Chau Giang, and Perry Friedman.

Annie Duke, a woman, is also off to a decent start while Shannon Elizabeth isn’t so much. She’s down almost 2k from the start and is bundled up in a jacket trying to stay warm in the Amazon Room. It’s a bit nippy in here right now, you may have noticed.

Atlanta’s Yuval Bronshtein Doing Well Early In WSOP Europe H.O.R.S.E. Event

Yuval_bronshtein_2007_wsop_fireWe were going to give our friend Yuval Bronshtein shit for pimping his Atlanta homegames via MySpace bulletins, but we’ll cut him some slack and instead report that the 23-year-old razz specialist and WSOP final table-ist is currently sitting second in chips (23,900) in the WSOP Europe £2,500 H.O.R.S.E. event.

With the most chips right now is Norway’s Vegard Nygaard with 25,500, and Johnny Chan, who is gunning for his record-tying 11th WSOP bracelet, is in third with 20,400. Other notable players doing well early are Justin Bonomo (19,200), Robert Williamson III (17,600), Annie Duke, a woman (16,850), David Williams (16,500), Phil Hellmuth (15,700), Doyle Brunson (14,025) and a bunch of other players you know and can read about here.

105 players started in today’s event (minus maybe a big name player who was detained at the Las Vegas airport), and 92 still remain at the dinner break. The total prize purse for the first event of the WSOP Europe is £262,500 with only 16 places paid and the winner taking home £70,875.

Keep posted on today’s event over at PokerNews.com, where DrPauly, Snoopy1239, Change100 and others are all over the action at the tables like Drew Barrymore on the “I’m a Mac” guy, except not as weird.

Also, be sure to check out the always fun to watch Tiffany Michelle who is in London doing live video interviews for PokerNews.com

UPDATE: Just past midnight in London, and Yuval Bronshtein is the current chipleader in the H.O.R.S.E. event with 37k in chips and Vegard Nygaard is not far behind with 31,200. From a quick look, the gang over at PokerNews.com has failed to mention Yuval’s name once today for one reason or another but they do have a photo of Gary Jones with green hair, again, for one reason or another. Yuval had an impressive summer in Las Vegas at the 2007 WSOP, finishing 3rd in the $2k Pot Limit Hold’em event to cash $109,018 and 37th in the $2k Limit Hold’em event. Razz and H.O.R.S.E. are his games though so it’s no surprise that he’s off to a good start today.

Today’s Card Player “LIKE YOU WERE THERE” Moment

Unless the 2006 WSOP is like the entities that comprise Wicked Chops Enterprises LLC and has the staying power and quick rebound abilities to create multiple climatic moments in a short period of time, then the 2006 WSOP might have already experienced its climax with the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event.

Because everything seems to be going downhill, from the actual play to the coverage of [the play].

Now if we were gay black men in the early 90′s, then we’d readily admit we gave Card Player "two snaps up in a circle" for finally upping their game during the H.O.R.S.E. event. Relatively speaking, their coverage of the H.O.R.S.E. tourney, while maybe not on par with other enterprises, was still top notch Kickingselfinheadconsidering where they had previously set the bar. But with Chip Reese’s big win, an ugly hangover seems to be setting in across the Rio. One that may only be cured by a Hellmuth 10th bracelet or the onset of the Main Event. Nowhere is this hangover more evident than at Event #22 ($2,000 NLH, currently lead by Julian Gardner). We’re not sure what would make us want to kick ourselves repeatedly in the head more, actually having to be there to watch the play, or reading more updates like the one below…tough call.

Action Slows at Table 119
At table 119 action has slowed considerably.  Most of the poker is being played pre-flop with players raising, facing a re-raise and then folding.
