Huck Seed, Three Others Advance to NBC National Heads Up Poker Championship Semifinal

While Huck Seed (expectedly) advanced to another NBC National Heads Up Poker Championship semi-final, the real story to everyone else will probably be Vanessa Rousso, a woman, who went to Duke, did as well.

Safe to say that as bad as Layne Flack's year has been, Rousso has been the equivalent on the good side. First, the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Then the GoDaddy.com commercial (view again below). And now a semi-final run that will surely be the lead storyline when NBC starts editing this all together.

Unlike Shannon Elizabeth's run two years ago, it's kind of hard to call Rousso's advancement a fluke. She's defeated Doyle Brunson, Phil Ivey, and most recently Daniel Negreanu to get to the final fourTM. Now, she'll face the tour's hottest player, Bertrand Grospellier, for a spot in the finals.

On the other side of the bracket, Huck Seed will go against Sam Farha. Matches are expected to begin around 3:30 PST.

Huck Seed, 7 Others Advance at NBC National Heads Up Poker Championship

Our perennial pick to win it all, Huck Seed, has become the first/only person to cash in all five NBC National Heads Up Poker Championships by…cashing at the 2009 NBC National Heads Up Poker Championship.

Seed will face last minute scratch entry David Oppenheim in the quarterfinals. Oppenheim replaced Layne Flack and has made the most of it by registering his first quarterfinals appearance.

Also making his first quarterfinals appearance is Daniel Negreanu. In a lock to be the featured table, he'll take on Vanessa Rousso, a woman, who went to Duke.

Phil Hellmuth got a measure of revenge for last year's loss to Tom "Durrrr" Dwan by pretty much pwning him this go around. Hellmuth will face arguably the hottest guy on the circuit right now (performance-wise), Bertrand 'ElkY' Grospellier.

And in the final quarterfinals match, David Williams will face Sam Farha.

Below is an interview with Huck Seed from the draw party Thursday night. It seems like Huck might have cracked the code on how to be successful at HU poker. Maybe Seth Rogan was right in Pineapple Express. Weed does make everything better.

DoylesRoom.com Renews Doyle Brunson Sponsorship

Doyle Brunson playing poker in the H.O.R.S.E. event at the 2008 WSOP

There’s been some speculation as to why Doyle Brunson (and Todd Brunson) were without DoylesRoom.com logos the first two days of the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event at the 2008 WSOP (speculate on the WCP forum here). Even stranger, why were Hoyt Corkins, Dancing with the Stars’ Shannon Elizabeth, Sam Grizzle, and others still wearing the logo around? Even stranger, DoylesRoom.com’s marketing strategy.

Anyway, Doyle donned the DoylesRoom.net logo again today. Although he doesn’t look thrilled about it from the above photo. He could be Glum Girl‘s grandpa.

All of this speculation though doesn’t seem to be impacting Doyle’s game, as he’s still above averaged stacked. Huck Seed, who happens to be our pick to win it, is currently the chip leader. Follow the action here.

Huckleberry Seed razz-ing it up at the 2008 WSOP today.

Since the Entities who comprise Wicked Chops Poker have vowed to pick Huck Seed to win every major event he enters until he wins a major event, and since that $5k buy-in tournament he won in America’s Hat doesn’t really count as a major event, we’re picking Huck Seed to win Event No. 26 at the 2008 WSOP, the $1,500 buy-in Razz tournament.

Huck’s currently stacked at 8,100. Vanessa Rousso, a woman, who went to Duke where she studied at Duke, is the current chipleader with 17,600.

Today’s 5 pm start, the Razz event drew 454 players, including a healthy number of old school-ers like Sam Grizzle, Tom McEvoy, Dewey Tomko, Berry Johnston, Thor Hansen and Billy Baxter as well as some top online-ers like JohnnyBax, BeLOWaBOVe and Pearljammer.

The total prize pool is a smallish $622,440 with first walking away with $158,659.

Breaking News: Huck Seed Wins Major Poker Tournament

Huck Seed wins 2008 Canada Open Poker ChampionshipAs many of you know, the Entities who comprise Wicked Chops Poker have been picking poker pro Huck Seed to win a major poker tournament for the past few years now, but to no avail.

First he disappointed at the 2006 National Heads-Up Poker Championship when he came up just short in 3rd place. Then the 2007 WSOP Main Event, where he finished 73rd. And most recently he fell short at the 2008 National Heads-Up Poker Championship, coming in 3rd once again.

Well, word just got out today that Huckleberry Seed has won the 2008 Canadian Open Poker Championship in Calgary, Alberta, where it must be like 70 degrees below zero today. If the sun is out.

The tournament was a $5,000 buy-in event featuring 128 players competing in a heads-up format. Among the big name pros who competed were Bill Edler, Mel Judah, Gavin Smith, Antonio Esfandiari, Greg Mueller, Phil Laak and Jennifer Tilly, a woman.

Seed, who first/last hit it big when he won the 1996 WSOP Main Event, was up against Canadian poker pro Brad "Yukon" Booth at the final table, and came away the victor, if you some how didn’t read between the lines of this post. For the win, Seed takes home $100,000. Booth cashes $50,160.

"This was an amazing tournament in terms of both structure and quality of players" said Seed after his win. "I love it when the cream rises to the top and I get a chance to play with the best in the world. I am so happy that I finally won a heads up tournament!"

Among the top six finishers at the 2008 Canadian Open: Gavin Smith (4th – $30,000) and 2005 WSOP Main Event champ Joe Hachem (6th – $20,000).
