The Year of The Comeback(TM)?

It was supposed to be The Year of the WomanTM? But that doesn’t look like it’ll happen now.

So is the 2010 WSOP now The Year of the ComebackTM?

Consider this:

:: Although he’s had a string of big cashes over the past few years, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, for the most part, had fallen off from the top tiers of the poker mass consciousness. With a win in the $50k Player’s Championship (for $1,559,046) and a final table in the $10k 7CS championship, it’s like 2005/2006 all over again for Grinder.

:: Speaking of 2005, where the hell has Tex Barch been? After coming in third at the ’05 Main Event, Barch hasn’t done much. But he won a bracelet at this year’s WSOP in a PLO event and is among the early chip leaders in another [PLO event].

:: Speaking of the Main Event, what the fuck has gotten into Jerry Yang? After running like/praying to God in the ’07 Main Event, Yang literally had 1 cash in any event until this year. Then he finished 8th in the NBC National Heads-Up Poker Championship, and has three in-the-money finishes at this year’s WSOP.

:: Finally, speaking of three cashes in the 2010 WSOP, welcome back Ylon Schwartz. While he did have a final table at last year’s WSOP, aside from maybe banging Jenny Woo, haven’t heard much from Ylon either. But he’s been around page 1 on almost every chip count page this year, it seems.

So who’s ready to step up next? And would Men “The Master” Nguyen and Matt Matros‘ wins qualify in the comeback category?

Ooorrr…is it more of the Year of the Hey It’s You AgainTM?

UPDATE: Our friends at ESPN are calling it the Year of Redemption.

2010 WSOP Update: Vladimir Shchemelev At It Again

Jerry "The Shadow" Yang cashed in another 2010 WSOP event...is this the Year of the Comeback(TM)? More on that later..

While he’s not the Player of the Year leader as of now (that goes to Britain’s James Dempsey), Vladimir Shchemelev is definitely one of the “bigger” stories of the 2010 WSOP. The Russian banker (that just sounds shady) is the first player to make the final table of three $10,000 buy-in or higher events at one World Series. And he’s got a shot for a fourth, as he’s among the early chip leaders of the $10,000 Limit Hold’em event. Wtf. On with the updates…

:: Event #24 ($1,000 NLH) - This one is still going on? Friends and family final tableTM. Full chip counts here.

:: Event #26 ($2,500 NLH Six-Handed) - The starting field of 1,245 is down to 15. Daniel Negreanu was the final elimination of the night, going out in math math math 16th ($23,537). Steve Cowley is the chip leader going into the final day, stacked at 1,279,000. Justin Smith (641,000) and Erik Cajelais (345,000) also remain. Get full chip counts here.

:: Event #27 ($1,500 7CS 8oB) – The intention was to play this one down to the final table, but that didn’t happen, and 23 remain, including three women. Davidson Matthew Club member Maxwell Troy is the chip leader, stacked at 430,000. Albeit far, far behind, Brandon Cantu still remains with 50,000. Full chip counts here.

:: Event #28 ($2,500 PLO) - A total of 596 entered with 105 surviving to Day 2. Loren Klein, not a woman, is chip leader, stacked at 187,300. Other notable bigs include but are certainly not limited to Tex Barch (72,600), T.J. Cloutier (70,400), Chau Giang (59,800), and The Intense Stare of Scott Clements (58,200). Get full chip counts here.

:: Event #29 ($10,000 LH) - A total of 171 entered the final event of the day, creating a first place prize of $425,969. Jeffrey Lisandro ended the night as chip leader, stacked at 130,900. The aforementioned Vladimir Shchemelev is sixth overall with 99,800. Of the holy triumvirate, only Phil Ivey remains with 53,300. Get full chip counts here.

Jerry Yang Won’t Repeat as the WSOP Main Event Champ

Jerryyang3

Jerry Yang (above, at home) has been sent home at the 2008 WSOP.

2007 WSOP Main Event champ Jerry Yang will not be 2008 WSOP Main Event champ Jerry Yang.

After a rollercoaster ride on Day 1whateverdayheplayed, The Shadow bowed out earlier in Day 2B play.

Action today has been fast and furiousTM, but many of the big names still remain. At the featured table is another past champ, seriously Chris Moneymaker, who is seriously thriving with 91,000. No, seriously. He is.

Leading everyone right now is Terry Lade with 310,000. He’s followed by that Henning Granstad guy with 277,000. "Cliff" Johnny Bax "Josephy" is next with 245,000.

Among the eliminated today are a bunch of babes, including Lacey Jones (who without a doubt will be the hottest girl sent to rail, pictures coming), Clonie Gowen (a woman), and Shannon Elizabeth (a woman).

Full chip counts here.
