2011 WSOP: PearlJammer Leads $1k NLH, Satan Playing $10k Omaha Event

Jerry Buss made it through to Day 2 of Event #11 but not stacked nearly as well as he would've liked.

:: Event #8 ($1,000 NLH) – Day 3 gets underway in just a bit, and leading the way when that does happen will be Jon ‘PearlJammer’ Turner, a ginger, who has a soul-stealing lead of almost 200k in chips over Kyle Speake and Hunter Frey, second and third, respectively. Other notables remaining in the 59 player field include Jonathan Duhamel, Eric Mizrachi and… that’s about it, which is par for the course in a $1k donkfest. Get full chip counts here.

:: Event #9 ($1,500 2-7 NL Lowball)Matt Perrins rode his final table chip lead all the way to a bracelet in this event, walking away with $102,105 for that feat. The most notable player at the final table, Jason Mercier, also started as the short-stack and was, therefore, the first to bust. Full payouts here.

:: Event #10 ($1,500 NLH 6-Handed) – The impressive starting field of 1,920 was even more impressively reduced to only 188 remaining players in the span on a single day of play. Those players are now only eight spots from the money when play resumes today, and Anthony Spinella will sit down with the largest stack in the room when that happens. Notables still alive include Amit Makhija, Benoit (Balls!!) Albiges*, Matt Stout, Eric Froehlich, Erica Schoenberg (Lindgren?), Victor Ramdin and several others who were too far down the list before we stopped scrolling. Winner will be looking at a solid $544,388 for navigating this field, which will be awarded sometime tomorrow. Full chip counts here.

:: Event #11 ($10,000 Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better) - 202 entered and 164 still remain with Fabrizio Gonzalez as chip leader ahead of Eric Buchman. Freddy Deeb, Erick Lindgren (Schoenberg?), Alexander Kostritsyn, Josh Arieh, Daniel Negreanu, the Intense Stare of Scott Clements and … holy shit… according to PokerNews, somebody named Prince of Docness (44,100 in chips). Awesome. Are they trying to bust CardPlayer again for ripping off their chip counts or is this a real person, who lives in his mom’s basement and has friends with names like Azriel? Or is Omaha really the devil’s game? Full chip counts here.

*Not actually notable, but deserving of this reference.

2009 WSOP Round-Up: Jon ‘Pearljammer’ Turner Goes For First Bracelet

It was all business in the front, party in the back at the 2009 WSOP yesterday.

It was all business in the front, party in the back at the 2009 WSOP yesterday.

While the big storylines of the day were Nick Schulman‘s first bracelet win and the introduction of Tig Bits to the newly created Girls on the Rail Hall of Fame (we’re creating one, and will have you guys select the first inductees, which we’ll set up sometime soon… so probably in two weeks to a month), there was plenty of action in all poker disciplines yesterday at the 2009 WSOP. Here’s the breakdown:

:: Event #24 ($1,500 NLH): The field played down to 20 last night with most of the big names bowing out. Andy ‘BKiCe’ Seth is the overnight chip leader, stacked at 1,250,000. Never trust a guy with two first names. Only other person most of you would know remaining is Dean Hamrick (guy who just missed out on the November NineTM last year) with 510,000. The completely adorable Kara Scott (video blog below) finished 58th. Joe Sebok went out in 104th. It’s just like high school. Get full chip counts here.

:: Event #25 ($2,500 Omaha/7CS 8B): With 14 remaining in this Omaha/Seven Card Stud hi/lo mixed game, Jon ‘Pearljammer’ Turner, a ginger, has built a sizable chip lead, stacked at 465,000. He’s followed by Carlos Mortensen with 328,000. Other big stacks include but are certainly not limited to Dutch Boyd and Phil Ivey. Get full chip counts here.

:: Event #26 ($1,500 Limit Hold’em): With Day 1 in the books, 124 of the starting 643 remain. Jan Von Halle, not a woman, but a German, is big stack with 68,300. Other big named big stacks include Justin Bonomo (44,800), Paul Darden (39,300), and Barry Greenstein (32,200). Get full chip counts here.

:: Event #27 ($5,000 PLO Hi/Lo): The final event of the day brought in a field of 198. The overnight chipleader is J.D. Newitt, whose poker playing is quickly making us forget about the certain emailing incident that we won’t ever mention again from this point “forward,” with 185,900. Other big named big stacks include Roland de Wolfe (dude is heating up), Amnon Filippi, Andy Black, and Daniel Negreanu. Get full chip counts here.

Catching Up With 2008 WSOP Gingers of the Day

Ginger_james_mackey
Don’t hate on James "mig.com" Mackey. The kid’s got game.

We all know that being a ginger is one of the toughest things anyone has to endure in life.

The orange hair. The freckles. The lack of a soul.

While some gingers we featured during the 2008 World Series of Poker have embraced their gingerism, others are just coming to terms with it. (revisit our ginger super-thread here)

Take James "mig.com" Mackey. In a recent $100r tourney on Stars, Mackey was insulted with the following slurs after sucking out with As-9s (posted here on the Pocket 5′s thread tilted "I didnt realize people hated gingers so much"):

pykesgoinpro: lol the ginger wins it
BabyGrand [observer]: even a fkn ginger 12 year old can do it
pykesgoinpro: just dont like poepel with aids or gingavitus

On a side note, in the same thread, hats off to poster mathclub for this pmp comment:

"my friend has a ginger brother and sister but he is normal.  talk about dodging bullets."

However, other gingers, like Jon "Pearljammer" Turner (a two-time Ginger of the Day by request) and Super Ginger Cory Albertson have embraced their God-given lack of having a soul.

In his awesomely titled "It’s Orange Not Red" blog, Albertson says:

"I take great pride in that my ginger hair, sunglasses, and track jacket were good enough for me to be dubbed the "Super Ginger" of the WSOP. Hey… it’s better than nothing!"

Even Last Ginger StandingTM finalist Sean Davis embraced his inner-ginger with an email to WCP. Maybe hit us up again and we’ll ship a t-shirt.

We’ll keep tracking the progress of all your favorite gingers in upcoming tournaments. Why? Because someone has to.
