2008 WSOP Update: J.C. Tran Goes After First Bracelet (Again); Phil Hellmuth Takes Aim at Number 12

Kyla_cole

While most of the attention was on the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. event, some big names were making their mark on other 2008 WSOP tournaments this weekend.

:: Event #48 ($2,000 No Limit Hold’em) - Unfortunately none of those big names were in this one. Brazalian Alexandre Gomes took this won down, banking $770,540 and his first bracelet. Get full payouts results.

:: Event #49 ($1,500 No Limit Hold’em) - The mega-field of 2,718 is down to its final nine. Rasmus Nielsen is the chip leader, stacked at 2,998,000. The spectacularly-breasted J.C. Tran (above) once again goes for bracelet number one, entering the final table second overall in chips with 1,438,000. Joe Pelton, who a couple years ago had a cool girlfriend but we haven’t heard much from since, is third with 1,093,000. Get full chip counts here.

:: Event #50 ($10,000 Pot Limit Omaha) - Nice turn-out as 381 signed up, creating a first place prize of $859,532. Josh Arieh just killed it on Day 1, ending play as big stack with 343,700. He’s followed by Guillaume Patry with 226,400. Some other big name big stacks include David Williams (142,900), David Singer (128,200), Nenad Medic (101,800), and The Intense Stare of Scott Clements (88,600). Get full chip counts here.

Josh Arieh on Atlanta Poker Busts: “So Ridiculous. They Blow It Out of Proportion”

Joannakwsop20Atlanta’s Josh Arieh chatted it up with Phil Gordon on ESPN’s The Poker Edge podcast yesterday and among the topics were the recent poker busts in his hometown. Arieh has played with some of the guys nabbed in the first raid and said that the reports have been blown out of proportion and that the game was a $1,000 max buy-in $5-10 NL game and not a $10k buy-in high stakes game. He also poignantly explained how the media is out to make these poker players, especially in the Roswell raid, seem like the “filth of the Earth,” with erroneous accusations about drugs being found.

Also of note, the two talked about Gordon’s wedding this weekend and Arieh candidly shared his views on a number of topics, including money management, living in a house full of women, golf hustling, the art of Pot Limit Omaha and how easy it is to win Gavin Smith’s money, something Joe Sebok knows a little about.

Check out the MP3 of the podcast here or head over to The Poker Edge. The podcast starts with the illustrious Andrew Feldman reporting the news, followed by a bit on the World Series of Golf, then Josh.

Update from the Floor: Lacey Jones, Vaughn Sandman, Brian Balsbaugh, a Few Pros + Joanna Krupa

Lacey_jones_6_1Apparently the Bellagio forgot to give Lacey Jones (above) her wake up call this morning (or afternoon to be exact), so she missed the entire first level and was blinded down to just 1400 in chips when she finally walked in. She was under the gun on the first hand and folded, and so with the big blind at 600 and antes 75, Lacey had to pick up a hand on the button to stay alive. She didn’t though, as she was dealt J-4 and was up against the button who had K-4. The board was no help and Lacey was out.

As we tell all really good looking people when they don’t win a competition, the thing that really matters in life is not whether you win or lose, but how you look and Lacey is one of the best at that. You may even say Lacey’s a gosh darn world champion. So congrats Lacey for looking good today at the WSOP, even if it was for just one hand.
