Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi Wins Second Bracelet

It's two bracelets in two years for The Grinder.

The former “best without a bracelet” has defeated someone who may now rank…dare we say… among the new “best” without.

Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi outlasted a stacked field to capture 2011 WSOP Europe Event #5 ( €10,400 NLH Split Format).

The win gives Mizrachi his second bracelet and adds €336,008 to his career tournament earnings (now totaling around $11.7M).

Mizrachi defeated Shawn Buchanan (€207,624) heads-up for the title. Buchanan just misses his first bracelet yet again, as this makes his third 2nd place finish in a WSOP event.

Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi Gets Breeders’ Cup Sponsorship

Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi is the male Shannon Elizabeth when it comes to sponsorships: Absolute Poker, Planet Hollywood, all the shit on his shirt above, Deliverance, Full Tilt, and now the Breeders' Cup.

Interesting move in the player sponsorship arena.

It was announced on Friday that Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi landed a sponsorship deal with the Breeders’ Cup.

The press release stated that, “The forming of this partnership will help introduce Breeders’ Cup wagering and the liquidity of the two-day event to the poker world.”

Says VP of media and entertainment Peter Rotondo:

“We believe that there is a strong cross-over between poker and horse racing, which has not yet been realized. We’re thrilled to have a relationship with ‘The Grinder’ which will allow for one of poker’s superstars to reach out to the poker world and educate them about the Breeders’ Cup and the over $160 million in liquidity during our two-day event.”

Smart move by the Breeders’ Cup, as we agree with the cross-over appeal. However, they should’ve patched up some of the final 27 at the 2011 WSOP Main Event if they really wanted big exposure leading up to the November 4-5 Breeders’ Cup at Churchill Downs, given the timing of when those episodes would air. More bang for the buck. Maybe next year.

Wicked Chops Awards: Comeback Player of the Year

We dubbed the 2010 WSOP as The Year of the ComebackTM. So when the Entities Who Comprise Wicked Chops Poker huddled together via email last week and exchanged a couple of emails discussed for hours who truly deserved Comeback Player of the Year honors, we had a surprising number of good choices.

Consider that Gavin Smith, Chris Bell, Tex Barch, and Scott Montgomery all re-entered the collective poker consciousness with bracelet wins.

On the World Poker Tour front, Antonio Esfandiari claimed his first title in six years. And David Williams, who had also gone awhile without a major score, won the WPT Championship.

But ultimately, after literal seconds hours of analysis, one man stood out: Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi.

While Grinder wasn’t hand-jobs-in-the-parking-lot-of-Caesars-for-buy-ins down on his luck, he had a few rough years that certainly weren’t producing the results he experienced in 2005-06, when he was inarguably one of the best tournament players in the world.

That drought all changed with the first event of the 2010 WSOP, when Grinder captured his first bracelet and banked over $1.5M at the Players Championship. He went on to make another three $10k buy-in event final tables, culminating in his Main Event fifth place finish.

While Grinder may not know it’s Christmastime (he’s among the chosen people), he definitely knows how to make a comeback.
