Hats of to the WSOP for classing up the joint with their new Poker Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

As you know, Mike Sexton was the sole inductee into the Poker HOF this year. Great stories about Mike from Doyle Brunson, T.J. Cloutier, and Mike’s brother Tom. Really interesting on how Mike was involved with PartyPoker from the very beginning and how he even selected the domain name.

Oh yeah, and Mike was a champion gymnast and his brother Tom won Dance Fever. WTF.

Mike Sexton Elected to Poker Hall of Fame

Howard Stutz of the Las Vegas Review-Journal broke last night that Mike Sexton will be the sole inductee into the 2009 Poker Hall of Fame class.

Sexton out-voted the likes of Phil Ivey, Tom McEvoy, Dan Harrington, Scotty Nguyen, Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein, Men “The Master” Nguyen, and Erik Seidel.

We had a vote. We voted for Sexton and McEvoy. Why?

Sexton got our nod more for his off-the-felt contributions. He’s a great player, nobody will deny that, but Sexton was instrumental in Party Poker’s early dominance, as well as the World Poker Tour’s early success, and getting the original Tournament of Champions off the ground. He’s acted with class and has repped the game as a great ambassador throughout his career.

McEvoy won the WSOP Main Event in 1983 and this year’s Champions Invitational. He’s authored a bunch of influential books (many with T.J. Cloutier) and was an early champion of getting smoking banned from card room (for us, maybe his greatest contribution).

Our hardest omission from the ballot was Dan Harrington. Went back and forth on him. Pretty good chance he’ll make the cut next year.

As for everyone else, Men the Master has the bonafides and longevity, but the cloud of suspicion around his cheating allegations makes him difficult to vote for…for now.

Everyone else just needs to log a few more years, although maybe if Ivey wins the November NineTM next month we’ll reconsider on him. Same goes to Erik Seidel if he keeps up his awesome twittering.

Watch Sexton discussing what it would mean to him to be inducted into the HOF in the above vid.

Anyway, read more about the induction here.

Time to stoke up the whole “Is Phil Ivey to young to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame?” debate once more.

The Poker Hall of Fame has narrowed its list of nominees for the 2009 Class down to nine players. They are (age in parentheses):

BARRY GREENSTEIN (54)
DAN HARRINGTON (63)
PHIL IVEY (33)
TOM McEVOY (64)
MEN NGUYEN (55)
SCOTTY NGUYEN (46)
DANIEL NEGREANU (35)
ERIK SEIDEL (49)
MIKE SEXTON (61)

Absent from the list is 23-year-old Tom Dwan, who the Poker Hall of Fame Governing Council remarked:

“With all due respect to Mr. Dwan, one of the games most exciting young players, he does not currently meet the criteria for Hall of Fame selection. We wish him well and expect he will again be considered once he has ‘stood the test of time.’”

The 15 living Hall of Fame members and a 15-member Media Panel have until October 2 to cast their votes. An induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Rio during the dinner break of the 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table.

Check out the criteria for the Poker Hall of Fame here. List who you’d vote for and why in the comments below.

For who Daniel Negreanu thinks should be inducted, go here.

UFC star Randy Couture held his Operation All-In charity event this weekend, and it brought out a number of top poker pros.

Among those in attendance were Mike Sexton, Howard Lederer, and Andy Bloch. The big topics of conversation among them were Mike Sexton’s likely upcoming induction into the Poker Hall of Fame, Phil Ivey’s chances of winning the 2009 WSOP Main Event (Lederer puts it at 7-1), and Andy Bloch’s potential $2M hit if Ivey does in fact win it.

BREAKING: 60 Minutes Interviews Mark Seif, Mike Sexton, Greg Raymer on Online Poker Cheating Scandal; Feature Rumored to Be a “Hatchet Job” on the Industry

by Wicked Chops Entity on June 17, 2008 TweetThis

in 2008 World Series of Poker, Absolute Poker, Absolute Poker Scandal, Mark Seif, Online Poker, Poker News, poker cheating

60 Minutes is here at the 2008 WSOP interviewing poker pros like Grey Raymer, Mark Seif and Mike Sexton about online poker

The long awaited 60 Minutes feature on the Absolute Poker online poker cheating scandal took a big step to hitting the small screen today. And Wicked Chops Poker is the only site with photos of the news event.

Anchor Steve Kroft, 62, interviewed Mark Seif (wearing an Absolute Poker jersey), Mike Sexton (not wearing a Party Poker one), Linda Johnson (why? was Shari Flanzer unavailable?), and Greg Raymer (wearing a Poker Stars shirt). The interviews took place in an empty Rio Amazon Room around 11am.

We overheard Raymer discussing the need for the U.S. American government to regulate online poker, and we can surmise because we’re smart-like-that that the rest of the messaging from the group was on point with the PPA’s platform. Raymer, a Libertarian, said he doesn’t see why the government should regulate his actions if they cause no harm to others. Johnson (why her again?) and Sexton both agreed with the need for regulation and taxation.

The wild card in this mix is that 2+2 poster and founder of the AbsolutePokerCheats.com website (here), Michael Josem, was also interviewed. How the stories weaved by Seif and Josem regarding the Absolute scandal will surely be a focal point of the piece and may eventually influence (ever so slightly) how legislators decide to handle the legality of online poker moving forward.

Unfortunately, word from our sources indicate that this 60 Minutes feature will be an outright "hatchet job" on the online poker industry. Although that’s really not much of a shocker. But it’s certainly not good news either.

More photos from the interviews below. The one of Josem with Seif in the background (second from left) is particularly great.

View the full 60 Minutes online poker scandal photo gallery here. If you swipe photos we appreciate the link back to WCP. And definitely re-watch Mark Seif’s interview on the Absolute scandal from last October here or view it in its entirety after the jump.

WPT Update: Official Layla Kayleigh Statement + Is Mike Sexton to Follow?

by Wicked Chops Entity on May 12, 2008 TweetThis

in Kimberly Lansing, Layla Kayleigh, Poker News, World Poker Tour

The WPT has released their official statement on Layla Kayleigh’s departure:

“Layla Kayleigh brought great edge, whit, and personality to the World Poker Tour as hostess in Season VI, and we sincerely wish her well as she continues to explore her TV career. We are currently casting for the Season VII TV hostess role, and look forward to introducing her to everyone soon.”

WCP votes for Kimberly Lansing to be the new WPT HostessWe can confirm that the hosting role is now in its final call back stage. No word if Kimberly Lansing (at right) is part of that final call back or if the WPT is looking to go in an entirely different direction. If we had some sort of WPT super-delegate vote though, we’d cast it for Kimberly Lansing.

Rumors are also swirling that Layla Kayleigh might not be the only WPT’er not coming back. We’ve heard rumblings in poker circles that Mike Sexton may also be on the outs. As commenter The Truth on our site succinctly noted:

Mike Sexton’s contract is up, he is not expected to return (his wife is pregnant with his first child). Linda Johnson’s last episode will be the WPT Ladies Night at Bellagio. I don’t know what will happen to Van Patton. It is unknown if GSN will renew the WPT contract, the new CEO is alleged to be anti-poker. I think we are looking at the end of the WPT.

Remember the last time an anonymous commenter broke news on WCP?

While we don’t think this is the end of the WPT, it will be interesting to see what direction the company will take in the near future.
