Erik Seidel Takes a Deuce (and 8th Bracelet)

Erik Seidel is kind of like the Paul Molitor of poker. He just plugs along, plugs along, always a star but not necessarily a superstar, and next thing you know you look up and he’s got 3,000 hits and a sure-fire spot in the Hall of Fame. Or in this case, a ridiculously under-appreciated 8 WSOP bracelets.

Seidel captured bracelet #8 in one of our favorite tourneys, the $5,000 Duece-Seven Lowball w/ rebuys event. Not that we particularly like playing Deuce-Seven, but more so because "deuce" happens to be a synonym for "poo."

For the win, Seidel banks $538,835. He defeated reigning BLUFF Player of the Year, Lorenzo Lamas, heads-up for the title. Shawn Sheikhan finished third.

:: Sort of like the movie "Die Hard with a Vengeance," Mike Gracz is back with a vengeance, making his second final table of the 2007 WSOP. Phil Hellmuth Wins His 11th Bracelet

Philhellmuth_2After working his way through a field of over 2,700 participants, Phil Hellmuth (at right, photo by Flipchip at lasvegasvegas.com.) masterfully dominated final table play to win his 11th WSOP bracelet yesterday.

The win moves Hellmuth out of his three-way tie with Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan for most all-time WSOP bracelets.

Love him or hate him, there’s no denying Hellmuth is the best tournament hold’em player ever in the history of the world, possibly the universe. And he’ll be the first to tell you that too.

For the win, Hellmuth banks $637,254. Hellmuth defeated Andy Philacheck ($394,594) heads-up for the title. Rick Fuller, who used to bang date Clonie Gowen, finished third ($247,518). Morgan Machina, whose inability to finish in the top two denied us the opportunity to run with the headline "Man vs. Machina," landed in fourth ($161,425). Scott Clements came in fifth ($112,997), and Fabrice Soulier finished seventh ($64,570).

There Is No Quit in Phil Hellmuth

Only one thing stands in Phil Hellmuth’s way from winning his record-tying 10th bracelet: 8 other players.

Yes that one thing, those 8 players, can either contribute to Hellmuth’s heartache at the 2006 WSOP, or they can just let Phil win this damn 10th bracelet for shit’s sake. Seriously. Come on guys. HE WANTS THIS MORE THAN YOU DO.

Going into final table play, Hellmuth will be stacked at 768,000. In second is Daryn Firicano with 450,000. Others remaining include: Juha Helppi (436,000), Rafael Perry (235,000), John Spadavecchia (122,000), David Plastik (121,000), and Tony G (77,000).

Phil Hellmuth is Persistent

Hellmuthheadshot_1There’s an epic song that describes Phil Hellmuth circa summer 2006. It goes something like, "I get knocked down, but I get up again, no you’re never gonna keep me down…"

Yes, Phil Hellmuth is the walking talking living breathing version of Tubthumping. Hopefully Hellmuth won’t be pissing another night away by not closing out a WSOP event.

Because after coming thisclose not once, but twice, Hellmuth finds himself…dare we say…"in position" yet again to claim that ever-elusive and record-tying 10th bracelet.

Hellmuth is second in chips (by 100) in the $1,000 NLH with rebuys event, stacked at 109,600.

Ween_thepodHe trails only noted Internet pro Shane "Shaniac" Schlegler, whose name would be a bitch to say if he had a lisp or a fat tongue, who’s stacked at 109,700. Editor’s note: Schlegler’s Poker Stars icon is a picture taken off of Ween’s first album (The Pod). This guy gets major, major WCP points for that.

Anyway, as stated on this very website before, we’d like to see Hellmuth pull this 10th bracelet out. He’s often not given his just due as a player (by anyone except himself), and plus, anybody who wants anything this badly deserves it already. It’s like that time that Wicked Chops Poker really wanted that yacht, mansion, and 72 virgin Brazalian models and we got all of that except it ended up being 87 virgins because that’s how badly we wanted it. Life lesson of the day: you can do anything you put your minds to, kids.

Of the 61 (from 754) remaining, notables include: Hasan Habib, Joe Bartholdi, Juha Helppi, James Van Alstyne, Tony G, David Plastik, 2006 WSOP bracelet winner Rafael Perry, that guy with a girl’s name who did something no man has ever done before (Shannon Shorr), Joe Sebok, John Spadavecchia, Bill Gazes, Humberto Brenes, and Mark Seif. IE there’s a lot of notables remaining.

Another side note: Daniel Negreanu rebought 48 times in this event. Not kidding.
