Hellmuth Takes Second Shot at Number 10

Phil Hellmuth really wants this 10th bracelet.

After coming thisclose to capturing bracelet number 10 to tie Johnny Chan and Doyle Brunson atop the all-time list in Event #9, Hellmuth now finds himself second overall in chips in Event #24 ($3000 Omaha hi-low).

Throwing all journalistic integrity aside, it’d be a great story to see Hellmuth win this. He’s playing unbelievable poker and to rebound after a crushing defeat just 10 days ago would be an exclamation Scottclementspoint on a career that still likely has [a few more exclamation points in it].

First, Hellmuth will have to get past Scott Clements. Clements cashed earlier in this year’s WSOP in the $2,000 Omaha Hi/Lo event and from the picture of him at right, looks as if he’s capable of killing you win you least expect it.

The rest of the final table chip counts: 2) (the aforementioned) Phil Hellmuth – 158,000, 3) Ronald Matsuura – 120,000, 4) Alex Limjoco – 116,000, 5) Peter Costa – 108,000, 6) Stephen Ladowsky – 97,000, 7) Thor Hansen – 86,000, 8) Martin Corpuz – 76,000, 9) Brent Carter – 49,000.

H.O.R.S.E. Final Table: Will Brunson Win Bracelet 11?

There is no dead money at the 2006 WSOP $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. final table.

Chipreese_1After a marathon Day 2 that lasted past 9am (PST), Chip Reese, recognized by many as perhaps the best all-around poker player of all-time, will enter final table play tonight at 9pm (again, PST) big stacked with 1.75M. Some interesting sub-plots, if you will:

:: Reese is clearly missing a “big-time” title from his tournament resume. Will this be the event he breaks through?

:: Can Doyle Brunson distance himself from Johnny Chan and claim the all-time bracelet lead just for himself with number 11?

:: Can Phil Ivey capture bracelet number 6, something he just missed doing last week?

:: Does Barry Greenstein suddenly hate impoverished children? If not, how does one explain his lack of final tabling (he bubbled in this one, along with Gavin Smith), which is clearly getting on Chops’ nerves, since Greenstein was his first selection in the WSOP fantasy league draft. Kids need food!!! Wiiiiiiiiiinnnn!

Poker Pages actually has a good write-up of all 9 final table contestants, which also includes T.J. Cloutier, David Singer, Dewey Tomko, Jim Bechtel, Andy Bloch, and a very short-stacked Patrik Antonius.

Hellmuth Looks to Claim Elusive 10th Bracelet

Phil Hellmuth is focused this year. He wants that 10th bracelet. He neeeeeeeeds that 10th bracelet.

And he may just get it.
Philhellmuth
Hellmuth, a WCP fave (for real), has put himself in position to tie Doyle Brunson and Johnny Chan for most all-time WSOP bracelets by making the final table of Event #9 ($5,000 NLH).

But it won’t be a cakewalk, or a walk in the park, or some other walk that signifies that it won’t be easy. Hellmuth faces a final table that…dare we say…is star-studded?

Leading the way big-stacked at 784,000 is Vinnie Vinh, a man who likes to say his name more than Chops does. The table also includes Flying Dutchman Marcel Luske (458,000) and a woman(!), Isabelle Mercier (301,000). We’ll just throw it out there right now, if Mercier ends up winning this event, somebody will publish a “Have Mercy!!!” type headline. It will happen. You heard it here first. (It will probably be us.)

Hellmuth has some work to do, but he’s in good shape, stacked second overall at 461,000.

Follow the action at Card Player today starting around 2pm (PST). With the personalities involved at this final table (Hellmuth and Vinh have already been jawing), fireworks are sure to go off at any time.
