BREAKING: H.R. 2267 Online Gambling Bill Passes House Finance Committee

USA Bikini

Heidi Montag celebrates the passing of HR 2267 in the House Finance Committee by hitting the beach in a US American bikini.

Representative Barney Frank’s proposed bill, H.R. 2267 – the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act, just passed the House Finance Committee by a vote of 41-22.

According to the PPA, the bill establishes the licensing and regulatory framework for the U.S. to exercise control and oversight over Internet poker and other forms of Internet gaming.

The bill still has a long way to go before it reaches Obama’s desk but this is definitely a big step forward in cleaning up the UIGEA mess that Bill Frist and his cronies Pearl Harbor’d into law back in 2006 as well as towards the regulation of online poker in the U.S.

The omnisciently omnipresent Kevmath, who was all over the markup hearing today on Twitter and the 2+2 forum, sums up what’s next:

The bill gets reported from the Committee to the House floor. The next bill regarding Internet gambling is HR 2268, currently in the House Ways and Means Committee. It’s unknown if there will be another hearing on that bill or if/when markup will take place.

If Frank’s bill gets by the House, it will then be sent on to the Senate.

Leonardo DiCaprio To Star In Online Gambling Flick

Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover girl Bar Refaeli

Bar Refaeli assuming the position Leonard DiCaprio knows best. F#ck you Leo.

The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that occasional poker player and Doyle Brunson pal Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star in an upcoming movie about the world of Costa Rica-based online casinos. The script is being headed up by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, the duo that wrote the only poker film worth watching the past decade (besides the 40-Year-Old Virgin), Rounders. We don’t expect the film to be based on real events but between stuff like the raid on Calvin “Catch Me If You Can” Ayre‘s Costa Rica mansion and AJ Green‘s scamming millions from online poker players on Absolute Poker, there are plenty of true stories to draw from.

More on the movie here and here.

In related, much sexier news, photos below of Leo’s painfully hot, on-and-off again girlfriend and Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue cover girl Bar Refaeli.

Anti-Online Gambling Crusader Gov. Eliot Spitzer Linked to Prostitution Ring

Eliot Spitzer involved in prostitution ringIn news just breaking, New York Governor, superdelegate and anti-online gambling crusader Eliot Spitzer, a Democrat, is reportedly one of the “clients” identified in the Emperor’s Club V.I.P. prostitution ring busted up by feds last week.

A married father of three, Spitzer is best known as the corruption-busting former Attorney General of New York where he was a major force in stopping credit card companies from dealing with online gambling sites and who famously prosecuted the landmark case against Jay Cohen and World Interactive Gaming Corp.

In 2003, just ahead of the online poker boom, Spitzer said that credit card companies transacting with online gambling sites have “enabled gamblers to wreak sudden financial devastation on themselves and their families. In this insidious form of gambling, no physical or financial barrier insulates the gambler from the potential for significant financial losses.”

Barney Frank Says UIGEA is ‘Preposterous’, Working on New Legislation

160pxbarney_frankRep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), who the Boston Globe labels “outspoken, openly gay, and eminently quotable” and who last March said “adults are entitled to do with their money what they want to do” in opposition to efforts to ban online gambling, is quoted today in the Financial Times as saying, “I am working on legislation to cut back on this internet gambling thing‚Ķ I think it‚Äôs preposterous.” We first saw the news of this over at BillRini.com, to give credit where credit is due, so read more about the FT bit there.

Also worth reading is this piece over at Gambling911.com from February, in which Congressman Frank, who chairs the House Financial Services Committee, called for a two-year amnesty on the online gambling law.

Frank’s opposition to the prohibition of online gambling is nothing new, it’s worthing noting, as he was just as vocal seven years ago when the House tried to pass the Internet Gambling Prohibition Act of 2000.

As a good refresher of some of Frank’s spot-on talking points against prohibition, re-watch the video of him speaking before the House last summer on the issue after the jump . . .
