This Week In Poker: Episode 4

Fourth Episode of This Week In Poker Now Up and Archived

Guests last Tuesday included 2010 WSOP Ante Up For Africa winner Phil Gordon, UFC ring announcer and Full Tilt Poker red pro Bruce Buffer, 2009 WSOP Main Event Champion Joe Cada, and former Last Woman StandingTM champs and Amazing Race contestants Tiffany Michelle and Maria Ho. If you missed it, watch it above or go to the official This Week In Poker page here.

The ep was longer than a James Cameron flick in slo-mo, so here’s a breakdown of where the guests joined the show.

2:20 – Phil Gordon talks about his Ante Up For Africa win, prop bets with his kids, Dennis Rodman’s ridiculous laydown on Celebrity Poker Showdown, the state of online poker legislation and how freakin’ good the new breed of poker players are.

30:00 – Bruce Buffer dishes on UFC 116, Brock Lesnar, trademarking his catchphrase, the convergence of poker and MMA and his new poker room at the Luxor.

47:00 – Joe Cada opens up about how hectic life’s been since winning $8.55 million last November and is put on the clock during our Poker Metaphor Signifying You Have to Act Quickly Round.

1:01:00 – Maria Ho and Tiffany Michelle make out with each other for the remainder of the show.

This Week in Poker is broadcasting live from the WSOP every Tuesday at 4:00pm PST. It’s an interactive format where viewers can ask guests questions live in the Ustream chat box or via Twitter and Facebook. Once the WSOP is over, we’ll be doing the show from the This Week Instudios in LA with their slick set up and production crew. With the set up at the Rio, the production/show format’s obviously rough right now, thanks for baring with us over the next few weeks.

Thanks again to our sponsor, Victory Poker

Phil Gordon Has About-Face on Justin Bonomo, Loses Heads-Up to Him today at WSOP

Gordon_bonomo_wsop
Phil Gordon goes heads-up against Justin Bonomo today at the 2008 WSOP

Early in 2007, Phil Gordon publicly stated that he wanted nothing to do with Justin Bonomo, saying on his Poker Edge radio show:

‘”I don’t ever want to have him on the show…I don’t want his name brought up on the show.”

This week Bonomo’s name did come up on Gordon’s show, but this time the ridiculously tall poker pro (6’9″ to all those people who strangely google it and end up on our site) had nothing but praise for the 22-year-old, saying he considers him “extremely bright,” “a fantastic player,” “respectful and nice,” with “a very good attitude,” and that he will be a force to reckon with for years to come.

He also said that Bonomo is a much better player than him, something Bonomo was able to prove today when the two ironically faced off during the second round of the World Heads-Up Hold’em Championship at the 2008 WSOP. After being down to under 3k in chips, Bonomo stormed back for the win and will move on to the third round tonight.

As for Gordon, we hear he’s ready to have Bonomo on his show. Perhaps next week.

Relatedly, Gordon’s wife gave birth to a baby boy a few weeks ago, and word is some of the Tilt Boys have a wager on the kid’s eventual height. Over under set at 6’8″.

Read our original post on Gordon not wanting anything to do with Bonomo here.

Listen to Gordon talking about Bonomo, among other things, on Poker Edge here.

Josh Arieh on Atlanta Poker Busts: “So Ridiculous. They Blow It Out of Proportion”

Joannakwsop20Atlanta’s Josh Arieh chatted it up with Phil Gordon on ESPN’s The Poker Edge podcast yesterday and among the topics were the recent poker busts in his hometown. Arieh has played with some of the guys nabbed in the first raid and said that the reports have been blown out of proportion and that the game was a $1,000 max buy-in $5-10 NL game and not a $10k buy-in high stakes game. He also poignantly explained how the media is out to make these poker players, especially in the Roswell raid, seem like the “filth of the Earth,” with erroneous accusations about drugs being found.

Also of note, the two talked about Gordon’s wedding this weekend and Arieh candidly shared his views on a number of topics, including money management, living in a house full of women, golf hustling, the art of Pot Limit Omaha and how easy it is to win Gavin Smith’s money, something Joe Sebok knows a little about.

Check out the MP3 of the podcast here or head over to The Poker Edge. The podcast starts with the illustrious Andrew Feldman reporting the news, followed by a bit on the World Series of Golf, then Josh.

Annie Duke Wins 2006 World Series of Roshambo

Annie_roshamboAnnie Duke, a woman, has won the 2006 World Series of Roshambo, out-roshambo-ing a field of 64 roshambo-ers for the $10,000 cash prize. Marc Goodwin, a Brit who plays poker professionally when he isn’t roshambo-ing, got second ($7k). A man allegedly named Tim Beagley was third ($5k) and Neverwin Poker pro Micon was fourth ($3k).

The annual tradition, now in its second year, featured a who’s who field of roshambo’s finest including former Roshambo World Champion Rafe Furst, who proved he’s not just a one-sport wonder by winning a World Series of Poker bracelet this year. Other roshambo-ers competing in the Grand Concourse outside the Amazon Room (the end of the hallway down by The Poker Kitchen) were Mike Matusow, Lee Watkinson, Dutch Boyd, Tex Barch, Joe Hachem, Gavin Smith, Jennifer Tilly, Thor Hansen, Clonie Gowen, Kenna James, Carlos Mortensen, Mark Seif, Tony G, Matt Matros, Cyndi Violette, Howard Lederer, the Grinder and Jen Leo

While other roshambo-ers used predictable roshambo gambits like the “Scissor Sandwich,” “Fistful O’ Dollars” and “The Bureaucrat,” Duke agitated her competitors with her winning Dollar Bill strategy, looking at the digits of a serial number on a dollar bill and using 1-3 for rock, 4-6 for paper, and 7-9 for scissors.

Duke was a semi-finalist in last year’s WSOR.

“Duke demonstrates it doesnt take balls to win at roshambo,” claimed Chops, when asked by Snake for a comment.

More photos from the 2006 World Series of Roshambo after the jump.
