Phil Hellmuth Forgot About Something Today

Phil Hellmuth's chair < Vinnie Vinh's chair.

It was a mad scramble to find Phil Hellmuth, as the current Player of the Year forgot he was playing today.

There has been some confusion with a few players who had played Day 1C thinking they wouldn’t be playing again until Day 2B.

Hellmuth was one of them.

From his Twitter feed:

Security broke into my room, I’m like, “What’s going on?!?” SGuard says, “You’re playing in the World Series of Poker today.”
I jump out of bed, dress, and run down to my car. Didn’t know you could drive 75 on side roads!! I Thought I played Day 2 Tuesday…
Never crossed my mind that I played today!! Started $11,800: 1 hr 40 min late + had $6,975, OUCH!! Changed Sunday to Sat to do charity event

Hellmuth has since built his stack back up to around 10k.

2011 WSOP Main Event Starts Today

Seven years using this pic so why stop now.

In the seven (!?) years we’ve been covering the World Series of Poker, none other has sped along quite like this one.

The 2011 WSOP Main Event starts today. Hard to believe. Even harder to believe how quickly it’s moved as this year’s WSOP has been devoid of any major overarching “Year of the…” theme. Most of the big news has been away from the felt, and specifically with Full Tilt Poker dramabombs.

Regardless, the 2011 WSOP hasn’t be totally void of story lines. Here’s a quick look back at some of the major headlines.

:: Phil Hellmuth misses out on bracelet #12 not once, not twice, but thrice.

:: Brian Rast wins not one but two bracelets.

:: Ben Lamb makes a name for himself.

:: It’s the annual Ladies Event Photo Dump.

:: And Jonathan Epstein does not win the Ladies Event.

:: Phil Ivey says he’s not playing in the WSOP.

:: Jason Mercier wins his 2nd bracelet. He good at pokers.

:: So is Andy Frankenberger.

:: And finally…browse through all of our Girls on the Rail.

Looking forward to a good Main Event. Be sure to follow more detailed coverage on the RISE Poker blog.

Phil Hellmuth Does Not Win 12th Bracelet Again; Brian Rast Capture $50k

Third time was not a charm on flush draws or bracelet attempts for Phil Hellmuth.

Ouch.

Phil Hellmuth finished second for the third time at the 2011 WSOP, falling just short again of his 12th bracelet.

This time, Hellmuth lost to PokerVT pro Brian Rast, who overcame a 5-to-1 chip deficit to become the first person at this year’s WSOP to win two bracelets.

Hellmuth was in control most of the final table, but ultimately did not hit his flush draw on three different all-in attempts against Rast.

For the win, Rast banks $1,720,328. Hellmuth earns his biggest single payday in his tournament poker career for second with $1,063,034. He also received probably his first ever standing ovation from a crowd after the defeat.

Hellmuth finished second in two previous events at this year’s WSOP: Event #16 ($10,000 2-7 NL) and Event #33 ($10,000 7CS 8oB). Even so, Hellmuth moves into first place for the 2011 WSOP Player of the Year race.

Phil Hellmuth Goes for 12th WSOP Bracelet in $50k Players Championship

Fittingly, the 2011 WSOP Player of the Year race may be determined by Ben Lamb and Phil Hellmuth at the $50k Players Championship final table.

Tuesday at the 2011 WSOP almost had a pre-UIGEA buzz. The Amazon Room (and Pavillion) were packed. There was a lot of energy and anticipation as the Main Event was nearing (and yet another $1,500 field popped a big entrant number). And a massive rail started forming by the $50,000 Poker Players Championship, as Phil Hellmuth is making another run at bracelet #12.

Going into the money bubble, Hellmuth was on life-support as one of the smaller stacks. But he rebounded after the bubble burst (Robert Mizrachi being the bubble boy), and the Poker Brat ended the day fifth in chips with 2,245,000.

With nine remaining, high-stakes pro Minh Ly is the big stack with 5,215,000. He’s followed by Brian Rast with 2,660,000.  The rest of the field includes: Matt Glantz (2,535,000), George Lind (2,315,000), the aforementioned Hellmuth (2,245,000), Owais Ahmed (1,425,000), Ben Lambeer (1,180,000), Jason Lester/Al Krux (oooold joke of ours, 920,000), and Scott Seiver (725,000).

So the remaining nine are fittingly and for the most part a “who’s who” of who’s running hot right now. Brian Rast, Owais Ahmed, and Ben Lamb have won bracelets this year. Hellmuth (with two) and George Lind have runner-up finishes this year. And Scott Seiver has three cashes and a WPT Championship in May to his credit.

We’re not going to do the math math math, but there are 2011 WSOP Player of the Year implications for this event as well, with Lamb in first and Hellmuth in fourth. We’d imagine it’d take an early exit from Lamb and a win from Hellmuth to alter the rankings, but again, fuck numbers.

Follow the action at 3pm PT on WSOP.com here.

Finally, how much would a Hellmuth victory (and his general performance at this year’s WSOP) change your historical perspective of him as a player? Weigh in in the Comments section.

Phil Hellmuth Does Not Win His 12th Bracelt (Again)

Ted Forrest is in disbelief as he just misses out on his sixth WSOP bracelet.

Second time wasn’t a charm for Phil Hellmuth, as he runner-upped another event at the 2011 WSOP (Event #33 – $10,000 7CS 8oB), just missing out (again) on his 12th bracelet.

Hellmuth is quickly becoming the Jack Nicklaus of poker, who had 19 second places in majors to go along with his record 18 total titles. Hellmuth now has 8 second place finishes to go along with his 11 WSOP bracelets. Like Nicklaus, who was far from beloved at the start of his career, there’s been a palpable turning of the tide in sentiment towards Hellmuth recently–and specifically at this WSOP. Hellmuth even has a younger [why's he gotta be black?] challenger nipping at the heels of his record in the Tiger Woods of PokerTM, Phil Ivey.

For the second, Hellmuth banked $273,233, pushing his 2011 WSOP earnings just over $500k.

In related news, Eric Rodawig of Arlington, VA won his first bracelet in this event, earning $442,183.

John Racener finished third ($171,122), Ted Forrest fourth ($123,904), and David Benyamine fifth (96,836 glazed donuts).
