2010 Poker Hall of Fame Class: Dan Harrington, Erik Seidel

What Dan Harrington's reaction probably looked like upon hearing he was elected into the Poker Hall of Fame.

The Poker Hall of Fame has two new members.

It was announced today that Dan Harrington and Erik Seidel will be inducted into the 2010 class.

Not much surprise here. Many felt that Harrington should’ve been elected last year. He won the WSOP Main Event in 1995 and made consecutive final tables in ’03 and ’04. Harrington has two WSOP bracelets, one World Poker Tour title, and over $6.5M in career tourney earnings. Adding to his credentials, his Harrington on Hold’em books helped thousands of new players in advanced tournament strategy during the first poker boom. He’s rumored to have sold around $20M in hold’em books.

Erik Seidel has 8 bracelets, one WPT title, and has seconds in the WSOP ME, Aussie Millions, and NBC National Heads-Up. Seidel has cleared over $10M in career tournament earnings, and he pwns twitter.

Said Seidel:

“I’m very honored to be elected to the Poker Hall of Fame this year and it’s an extra bonus for me to be going in with Dan Harrington…We have played together and have been great friends for my entire poker career. Both of us refined our games at the Mayfair Club in New York.  I have such a high regard for the many members of the Poker Hall of Fame that I have played with over the years and it’s a real privilege to be able to join them.”

Not making the cut this year were Scotty Nguyen (WSOP Main Event crown, $50K Player’s Championship winner, WPT title, almost $11M in earnings) and Phil Ivey (same credentials as Seidel, but with about $3M more in earnings plus an unreal cash game record).

2010 Poker Hall of Fame Nominees – Who Do You Like?

Rachel Nordtomme is a lock for first ballot induction into our Girls on the Rail Hall of Fame...voting starts next week.

Nominees for the 2010 Poker Hall of Fame have been announced. Not sure who we’re voting for yet–or if we’re voting for any of them.

Here’s the list, along with some thoughts on each:

:: Chris “Jesus” Ferguson – Has a Main Event win, five bracelets, is a Full Tilt founder, but hasn’t done much lately…or enough yet.
:: Barry Greenstein - Probably five more years of relevance away from a vote.
:: Jennifer Harman-Traniello – Not done enough yet. Plus didn’t she get elected into the Woman’s Poker Hall of Fame? Isn’t that enough for one year?
:: Dan Harrington – On the fence with Dan last year, still on the fence this year.
:: Phil Ivey - Tough one. If you vote for Ivey, you have to vote for Seidel. Feels like it’s postponing the inevitable not voting for Ivey at this point, but probably another couple of years away. However, anyone that doesn’t vote for Ivey is a racist.
:: Linda Johnson – Can see her getting the sentimental, “she’s such an ambassador!” vote. Not sold on her yet. Intrigued though.
:: Tom McEvoy - He might be a posthumous electee. Probably deserves more credit than he gets. Probably not getting a vote. Feels like he should marry Linda Johnson or something.
:: Daniel Negreanu – Had he pulled out a win in the WSOP-E Main Event or a bracelet over the past two years, would probably be in the discussion. Not this year though.
:: Scotty Ngyuen - Getting our vote. He’s done enough.
:: Erik Seidel – Tough one. Biggest “on the fence” guy for us. Definitely deserves election into the Twitter Hall of Fame though.

What do you think? Has Ivey done enough? Who is a lock? Who would you vote for?

Mike Sexton Poker Hall of Fame Induction (VIDEO)

Watch WSOP 09: Mike Sexton Hall of Fame Induction! on RawVegas.tv

Hats of to the WSOP for classing up the joint with their new Poker Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

As you know, Mike Sexton was the sole inductee into the Poker HOF this year. Great stories about Mike from Doyle Brunson, T.J. Cloutier, and Mike’s brother Tom. Really interesting on how Mike was involved with PartyPoker from the very beginning and how he even selected the domain name.

Oh yeah, and Mike was a champion gymnast and his brother Tom won Dance Fever. WTF.

Mike Sexton Elected to Poker Hall of Fame

Watch Randy Couture’s Operation All In GI Foundation Poker Tournament on RawVegas.tv

Howard Stutz of the Las Vegas Review-Journal broke last night that Mike Sexton will be the sole inductee into the 2009 Poker Hall of Fame class.

Sexton out-voted the likes of Phil Ivey, Tom McEvoy, Dan Harrington, Scotty Nguyen, Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein, Men “The Master” Nguyen, and Erik Seidel.

We had a vote. We voted for Sexton and McEvoy. Why?

Sexton got our nod more for his off-the-felt contributions. He’s a great player, nobody will deny that, but Sexton was instrumental in Party Poker‘s early dominance, as well as the World Poker Tour‘s early success, and getting the original Tournament of Champions off the ground. He’s acted with class and has repped the game as a great ambassador throughout his career.

McEvoy won the WSOP Main Event in 1983 and this year’s Champions Invitational. He’s authored a bunch of influential books (many with T.J. Cloutier) and was an early champion of getting smoking banned from card room (for us, maybe his greatest contribution).

Our hardest omission from the ballot was Dan Harrington. Went back and forth on him. Pretty good chance he’ll make the cut next year.

As for everyone else, Men the Master has the bonafides and longevity, but the cloud of suspicion around his cheating allegations makes him difficult to vote for…for now.

Everyone else just needs to log a few more years, although maybe if Ivey wins the November NineTM next month we’ll reconsider on him. Same goes to Erik Seidel if he keeps up his awesome twittering.

Watch Sexton discussing what it would mean to him to be inducted into the HOF in the above vid.

Anyway, read more about the induction here.

2009 Poker Hall of Fame nominee Daniel Negreanu along with 2009 Girls on the Rail Hall of Fame nominee Brittany Bowman

Time to stoke up the whole “Is Phil Ivey to young to be inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame?” debate once more.

The Poker Hall of Fame has narrowed its list of nominees for the 2009 Class down to nine players. They are (age in parentheses):

BARRY GREENSTEIN (54)
DAN HARRINGTON (63)
PHIL IVEY (33)
TOM McEVOY (64)
MEN NGUYEN (55)
SCOTTY NGUYEN (46)
DANIEL NEGREANU (35)
ERIK SEIDEL (49)
MIKE SEXTON (61)

Absent from the list is 23-year-old Tom Dwan, who the Poker Hall of Fame Governing Council remarked:

“With all due respect to Mr. Dwan, one of the games most exciting young players, he does not currently meet the criteria for Hall of Fame selection. We wish him well and expect he will again be considered once he has ‘stood the test of time.’”

The 15 living Hall of Fame members and a 15-member Media Panel have until October 2 to cast their votes. An induction ceremony will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Rio during the dinner break of the 2009 WSOP Main Event Final Table.

Check out the criteria for the Poker Hall of Fame here. List who you’d vote for and why in the comments below.

For who Daniel Negreanu thinks should be inducted, go here.
