2008 WSOP Update: Event No. 31, No-Limit Hold’em – Six Handed

A smiling Anthony Roux of Team Winamax is well-stacked late on Day 1 of Event No. 31

Day 1 of the $2,500 buy-in No-Limit Hold’em / Six Handed event at the 2008 WSOP has drawn to a close, and among the notable chipleaders include our favorite scarf-wearing Euro Dario Minieri, Bill Chen, Scotty Nguyen, Anthony Roux, the guy with the girl’s name Shannon Shorr, the awfully nicknamed Max "Italian Pirate" Pescatori and railbird-er Eric Liu.

A total of 1,012 runners entered to bring the prize pool to $2,327,600, with first cashing $528,418.

Play resumes tomorrow at 2pm PST. Chip counts updated before then here.

Shannon Shorr Can Fly

You may recall seeing 22-year-old poker pro Shannon Shorr, a guy, playing last year’s WSOP in a back brace and being pushed around in a wheel chair after he fractured two vertebrae and broke his heel. At the time he didn’t say much about what actually happened, just that he was “horsing around” with his roommates when “a major accident happened at the house” (Shannon’s blog post about it here).

Well, the accident, if jumping off a 15 foot ledge onto a deflated air mattress counts as an accident, was captured on film in all its jackass glory by his roommate Jerry “JLimbs” Limber, and it just got posted on YouTube today. Check it out below:

In related Shannon news, in case we haven’t mentioned it yet, Shannon Elizabeth is on Dancing with the Stars.

After the jump, the video of Tiffany Michelle interviewing Shannon Shorr at the WSOP two days after breaking his back . . .

World Holds Breath as Player of the Year Race Tightens

In what has to be the most gripping story in the world right now, the Card Player POY race continues to tighten, as more players inch closer to dethroning Michael "The Grinder" Mizrachi for the metaphorical crown.

Bellagio5diamondNam Le made yet another final table at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic, this time in Event #8 ($2,500 NLH). Le is now only 774 points away from overtaking the Grinder. Joining him at the final table was Jeff "Maddog" Madsen, youngest winner of two WSOP bracelets and mortal enemy of E-Fro, who finished third, possibly putting himself back in contention as well.

Also making a late charge is JC Tran. Winner of a World Poker Finals event last month (as well as recently taking down the 2006 WCOOP, which is not included in the POY standings), Tran won Five Diamond Event #7 ($2,000 NLH), giving him over $575k in live tournament earnings over the last 30 days.

Tran and Madsen have now moved into third and fourth place in the POY standings respectively, bumping Shannon Shorr, who just missed the final table in Event #8.

We will continue to possibly keep you posted.

Editor’s Note: The following Blogfiles + Heads-Up article was contributed by FOWCP, Jeff Sealey

So you‚Äôre sitting in your cube on a Tuesday morning surfing some poker sites. You just turned in your ‚ÄúTPS Report‚Äù and wrapped up your first useless conference call of the day. You check out Cardplayer.com and the Player of the Year standings. It‚Äôs filled with poker‚Äôs biggest names‚ĶMichael “the Grinder” Mizrachi‚ĶPhil Hellmuth‚ĶNam Le…Shannon Shorr‚Ķ

Wait, who?

Shannon Shorr?

A woman is ranked in the top 5?! This can’t be!

No my friends, Shannon Shorr is a dude, a poker blogger, and one of the best tournament players in the world today. He just won the Bellagio Cup II, a $10,000 buy-in event where he took home over $960k.

And believe it or not, his name has actually helped him score chicks. “They think the name is cute,” Shorr says. Hey, whatever it takes. But it probably doesn’t hurt that he has a million in the bank now too.

I consider Shannon Shorr a friend of mine, and did before he climbed to #3 (now #4) on Cardplayer’s rankings. Shannon is just a regular guy who loves poker, tells it like it is, and doesn’t take himself too seriously.

So then, who is Shannon Shorr?
