2010 WSOP Tournament Of Champions Airs On ESPN Tonight

Huck Seed TOC

SPOILER ALERT: Don't look at the photo above of 2010 WSOP TOC winner Huck Seed if you don't want to know who won the 2010 WSOP TOC.

The final table of the 2010 WSOP Tournament of Champions airs tonight on ESPN at 8pm EST/5pm PST.

ESPN has to be pretty happy with how its 2010 WSOP broadcast is starting off, especially after last year’s dismal first two episodes that included a ratings-dampening final table in the $40,000 buy-in event and an “absolute fucking worst-case scenario” final three players (McEvoy, Varkonyi, Harrington) in the Champions Invitational.

This year though, the $50,000 Poker Players Championship delivered big name pros and a couple of solid story lines, like the Mizrachi brothers, that was good enough to give ESPN a 15% increase in ratings over last year’s first show. And tonight, you have to think even more will tune in to watch the Tournament of Champions.

The All-Star-like, Made for TVTM tournament, which WSOP VP Ty Stewart brought back after a three year hiatus, produced a solid, mainstream-poker-fan-friendly final nine of Daniel Negreanu, Barry Greenstein, Annie Duke, a woman, Howard LedererJohnny Chan, Joe HachemHuck Seed, Jennifer Harman, a woman and T.J. Cloutier. As ESPN points out in its preview (below), the nine combine for 41 WSOP bracelets and over $32 million in winnings. Impressive stuff. Expect to see ESPN focus once again on the brother-sister angle of Lederer and Duke, like they did back during the 2004 TOC, as well as Johnny Chan finally coming close to winning something big again. Also, expect to see “Salty” Joe Hachem acting salty.

Of note, as WSOP VP TY Stewart told us in this video (about 1:22:00 in), next year’s TOC final table will likely be scheduled around the November Nine broadcast.

Preview from tonight’s second episode below. Reread our write-up on the event here.

Huck Seed Wins WSOP Tournament of Champions

Huck Seed won a battle of our Official Picks to Win it in capturing the first ever TOC.

Well, our old Official Pick to WinTM defeated our current Official Pick to Win ItTM in the first ever WSOP Tournament of Champions.

Huck Seed captured the inaugural TOC, defeating a field of around 21 or 22 of the best poker players in the world and a few other guys to bank $500,000.

He defeated Howard Lederer ($250,000) heads-up for the title.

Mercifully, Johnny Chan and “Salty” Joe Hachem were eliminated in third and fourth places, respectively.

Read more about Huck’s win here.

WSOP Announces Final Top 20 TOC Vote Getters

Candice Boucher

We couldn't find any photos of the Top 20 TOC Vote-Getters so here's South African model Candice Boucher.

The WSOP just announced the final top 20 vote-getters for the 2010 WSOP Tournament of Champions, and not at all surprising, it’s exactly the same 20 players who led the voting two months ago.

Just like the list, our thoughts on who got in and who didn’t hasn’t changed either. You can read it here.

Or to sum up what we said then: Really?

The only new thing here is the WSOP released how many votes each player received, and of the reported 355,081 total votes casted, it was Phil Ivey who received the most with 16,267, barely edging out Daniel Negreanu‘s 16,239 votes. Doyle Brunson was the 3rd top vote getter with 13,796, and 11-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth had the 4th most with 12,673.

Jennifer Harman, a woman, remained the sole woman in the top 20, grabbing 8,206 votes.

The 20 (see the entire list and vote tallies here) will join past TOC winners Annie Duke, Mike Matusow, and Mike Sexton, 2009  WSOP Main Event winner Joe Cada, 2009 WSOP Europe Main Event winner Barry Shulman, WSOP Academy Playoff winner Bertrand “Elky” Grospellier and WSOP.com UK online qualifier Andrew Barton as they compete for $1 million in prize money in the 2010 World Series of Poker Tournament of Champions on Sunday, June 27.

Again, the Top 20 Vote-Getters and respective number of votes here.

Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier Wins WSOP TOC Seat

If only the French army fought as hard as ElkY does...

Earlier today, nine people were invited to play a WSOP Academy single-table tournament with the winner receiving a free-bid into the WSOP Tournament of Champions.

The tournament concept itself–and the entrants, which only included one bracelet winner–were catching some heat from the so-called poker “media” and others–as “they” felt it more or less invalidated the purpose of having a Tournament of Champions where “one” needed a bracelet to qualify.

Unfortunately, the one bracelet winner, Michael “The Grinder” Mizrachi, couldn’t pull out a victory heads-up against Bertrand ‘ElkY’ Grospellier, voiding some of those complaints. Sooooo ElkY gets the seat. And there you have it.

In related news, we’ll announce our TOC winner tomorrow. Vote on the TOC here.

2010 WSOP Tournament of Champions Viral Video Contest

Well, we’ll give her an “A” for effort at least.

Jennifer Harman continues to put out viral videos campaigning for a seat in the 2010 WSOP Tournament of Champions. Her first video was brilliant in that in panned down to a gratuitous shot of her boobs. Now, had all of her videos done the same, we’d be like, “Fellini…Scorcese…Harman…greatest filmmakers of all-time?” However, the last two (the latest one above) are trending in the wrong direction. We know Jennifer can do better, but sometimes when you set the bar really high out the gate, you’ve got nowhere to go but down.

And it got us thinking: we know the rest of the TOC-eligible poker pros out there can do better too.

So let’s circumvent some of the twitter and facebook spam that will undoubtedly hit us in the run-up to the WSOP TOC June 15th voting deadline by you eligible pros and cut to the chaseTM: with permission begrudgingly given by the WSOP to use their registered trademarks (for real, and those C&D letters from Memphis make great bathroom reading) Wicked Chops Poker is offering all eligible TOC participants a chance to produce a viral video that could, potentially, get them into the top 20 in fan voting. We’re looking at you Prahlad Friedman, Jeff Madsen, Dutch Boyd, and etc.

Eligible bracelet winning pros, submit your TOC viral video idea to wickedchopspoker @ gmail.com. We will select the best, RawVegas.tv will produce it, and foot the bill. That’s right, you don’t even have to use any buy-in money for it.

The deadline for idea submissions is Monday, May 31st at noon PST. So get on it.

And view the current top 50 vote-getters here.
