UIGEA Delayed Until June 1, 2010

Will the days of unregulated online poker in the U.S. soon be behind us?

Will the days of unregulated online poker in the U.S. soon be behind us?

The Federal Reserve and U.S. American Treasury announced on Friday that implementation of the UIGEA has been postponed from December 1, 2009 until June 1, 2010.

From a statement:

Agencies Extend Compliance Date for Final Rule to Implement Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act

The Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve Board on Friday announced the release of a joint final rule to extend the compliance date for their joint regulation implementing certain provisions of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act by six months to June 1, 2010.

As Pokerati noted, the timing is interesting, in that the statement was released on one of the slowest news days of the year. Kinda like when Ub released their super-user names on Friday, September 11th, 2009 at 5pm.

We’ve been speaking with many lobbyists and others “in the know” on what was going to happen come December 1st, and the overwhelming opinion was that a last minute delay was going to be pushed through. These same people mostly agreed that a poker-only “exemption” may now be pushed through/attached to the Port Securities Bill, specifically with a focus on “age restrictions” and setting limits to curb “abusive” gambling behaviors.

All in all, good news on Thanksgiving weekend.

More of the insanely attractive Metzker Viktoria here.

We'd like to bongkoch Ms. Kongmalai, if you catch our drift...

In honor of stealing a land that was rightfully theirs from the Indians, we’re going to give thanks by getting drunk and stuffing our faces this week. Thus, we will be lighter on the posts than usual. When you think about it, it’s the right thing to do, really.

For now though, here are some not just poker links.

Bloomberg TV: Legalize Internet Poker?

by Wicked Chops Entity on May 13, 2009 TweetThis

in Online Poker, Poker News

The timing of Barney Frank's bill to oust the UIGEA was well timed. The WSOP is just two weeks away (more on that in a bit), and over 10 million people watched Annie Duke finish second on the Celebrity Apprentice (more on that later today too), so there is way more mainstream attention paid to poker in general now than normal.

On the heels of having Jeffrey Pollack on discussing the general economic enormity of the WSOP, Bloomberg TV ran a feature on why online poker should be legalized.

Harrah’s Backing Barney Frank Bill

by Wicked Chops Entity on May 6, 2009 TweetThis

in Barney Frank, Poker News

Barney_frank Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) introduced his only reason why we're still doing this site anti-UIGEA bill at a press conference this morning.

Frank's bill estimates over $63 billion in revenues for the government if it regulated online gaming over the next 10 years. Interestingly, Harrah's Entertainment is also backing the bill, which probably has everything nothing to do with the "maybe" hiring of ex-Party CEO Mitch Garber.

We'll post a video from the press conference if/when it becomes available (readers, please send link if you find it). In the meantime, read about Harrah's backing of the bill here and the press release on today's press conference here.

UPDATE: Good recap of the bill by Bluff here.

Greg Raymer Tells FOX Business: UIGEA Doesn’t Apply To Online Poker

by Wicked Chops Entity on March 13, 2009 TweetThis

in Online Poker

2004 WSOP Main Event champ Greg Raymer appeared on FOX Business News the other day to talk about legislative efforts to regulate and tax the online poker industry. During the interview the former attorney made it clear that he thinks the UIGEA doesn't apply in any way to online poker, hence the headline above, hence why are we writing this post? Warning: if the site of Raymer wearing his Fossilman glasses makes you cringe like it makes us, we suggest forwarding through the first 30 seconds or so. Better yet just skip the video and watch Chloe instead. The girl makes a valid point.
