WSOP Europe Moves To Cannes

Miranda Kerr

WSOP Europe is moving to Cannes, where hot super models like Miranda Kerr (above) are treize à la douzaine, whatever that means‎.

Harrah’s Caesars Interactive Entertainment announced today that the WSOP Europe is leaving London and moving to Cannes, France.

The series, which has the WSOP teaming up with Lucien Barrière Hôtels & Casinos and BarrierePoker.fr, will run from October 7 to 21 this fall, and be held at the salons inside the [copy & paste] Casino Barrière de Cannes Croisette and the Hôtel Majestic Barrière, right off the beach where actresses, glam models and prostitutes/playmates crawl around in bikinis like this and this on yachts.

This is a smart move for Caesars and the WSOP Europe in that the new footprint offers more than twice the number of tables than London did, thus able to handle much bigger fields, and well, it’s in Cannes, so way nicer tournament set-up and locale.  Since its start in 2007, the WSOP Europe has been held in less than optimal conditions in London, with players crammed in small tournament areas surrounded by noisy slot machines. The biggest field London ever saw for a Main Event was 362.

As part of the agreement with BarrierePoker.fr, seven regional qualifying events, billed as the Barrière Poker Tour 2011, will be held across the country. BarrierePoker.fr will also become the exclusive French home for online qualifiers for the Barrière Poker Tour, WSOP Europe and the WSOP in Las Vegas. A new WSOP.fr site will also be created.

Stay tuned here for more of our thoughts on the WSOP’s move to Cannes and what this means for poker in Europe and France specifically. For now, read Caesars’ official press release here.

Matt Savage on WSOP Europe Bracelets: Not Like A Real Bracelet

Matt-Savage-WPT

Matt Savage joined us on This Week In Poker live from the WPT Borgata last Tuesday.

We never ever pick favorites. Never. Ever.

With that said, our interview with Matt Savage last Tuesday on This Week In Poker was our favorite so far. Lots of solid topics covered, and great questions submitted from our viewers, including one from Jay “WhoJedi” Newnum on whether WSOP bracelets should be awarded outside of Vegas.

“I don’t like it,” said Savage. “I don’t think it’s like a real bracelet.”

Savage continued, “World Series of Poker was founded in Las Vegas. That’s kinda what it’s about.”

Listen to his full response here and tell us what you think about bracelets awarded outside of Las Vegas in the comments below.

Other topics covered with Matt Savage included:

:: Whether Allen “Chainsaw” Kessler has ever suggested something he has agreed with [watch]

:: The rumor about the Rio being sold and where the WSOP may be moving to next [watch]

:: Streaming final tables online [watch]

The Dark Side Wins As Barry Shulman Captures WSOP Europe Title

CardPlayer CEO Barry Shulman (above) wins WSOP Europe

CardPlayer CEO Barry Shulman (above) beat Daniel Negreanu heads-up to win the 2009 World Series of Poker Europe early this morning.

While Annette Obrestad‘s WSOP Europe win in 2007 had us hiding in our underground bunker as we awaited the Apocalypse, CardPlayer CEO Barry Shulman’s victory early this morning in London has us kicking our dogs, cutting off people on the freeway and just being all around total douchebags. Because apparently good things happen to people who suck.

In what was an epic heads-up battle between good and evil that lasted more than five hours, the “good guy” Daniel Negreanu came up short of the title after the so-called “Hand of the Year,” or as we like to call it, “Any given hand on any given night on Full Tilt.” Getting all-in on a flop of 5d-8d-Jc with Qc-Jd against Shulman’s pocket aces, Negreanu took the lead with trips after a jack fell on the river. As the crowd erupted, we thought about how much we fuckin hate writing hand recaps …blah blah blah and Shulman hit an ace on the river to give him a commanding chip lead over Negreanu. One hand later, Shulman was dealt tens to Negreanu’s pocket fours and sealed the title by hitting a set. Shulman banks £801,603, or approximately $156 million US dollars, for the win.

You can watch the above play out in this video. The crowd’s response is pretty telling. If you’re wondering who the only person is cheering for Shulman, it’s his wife.

To Shulman’s credit, he didn’t disparage Harrah’s or the bracelet he won (yet), something his son Jeff Shulman promises to do if he wins the WSOP Main Event this November.

This was Negreanu’s second consecutive WSOPE final table appearance, and with his £495,589 cash today, he is now the all-time leading money winner for career lifetime earnings. And that probably means absolutely jack squat to him right about now.

Jason Mercier Leads WSOP Europe Final Table

Not quite the WSOPE Main Event final table but it's pretty close.

Not quite the WSOPE Main Event final table but it's pretty close.

The WSOP Europe Main Event has played down to a pretty sick final table.

Two-time EPT and one-time bracelet winner Jason Mercier has the chip lead, stacked  3,198,000. He’s followed by November NinerTMJames Akenhead with 1,398,000. Another N9′er, Antoine Saout (the French one), is sixth overall with 701,000.

Making his second consecutive WSOPE Main Event final table is a short-stacked Daniel Negreanu with 438,000.

And like son like father, Barry Shulman makes the final table, stacked at 1,090,000.
