CardPlayer CEO Barry Shulman (above) beat Daniel Negreanu heads-up to win the 2009 World Series of Poker Europe early this morning.
While Annette Obrestad’s WSOP Europe win in 2007 had us hiding in our underground bunker as we awaited the Apocalypse, CardPlayer CEO Barry Shulman’s victory early this morning in London has us kicking our dogs, cutting off people on the freeway and just being all around total douchebags. Because apparently good things happen to people who suck.
In what was an epic heads-up battle between good and evil that lasted more than five hours, the “good guy” Daniel Negreanu came up short of the title after the so-called “Hand of the Year,” or as we like to call it, “Any given hand on any given night on Full Tilt.” Getting all-in on a flop of 5d-8d-Jc with Qc-Jd against Shulman’s pocket aces, Negreanu took the lead with trips after a jack fell on the river. As the crowd erupted, we thought about how much we fuckin hate writing hand recaps …blah blah blah and Shulman hit an ace on the river to give him a commanding chip lead over Negreanu. One hand later, Shulman was dealt tens to Negreanu’s pocket fours and sealed the title by hitting a set. Shulman banks £801,603, or approximately $156 million US dollars, for the win.
You can watch the above play out in this video. The crowd’s response is pretty telling. If you’re wondering who the only person is cheering for Shulman, it’s his wife.
To Shulman’s credit, he didn’t disparage Harrah’s or the bracelet he won (yet), something his son Jeff Shulman promises to do if he wins the WSOP Main Event this November.
This was Negreanu’s second consecutive WSOPE final table appearance, and with his £495,589 cash today, he is now the all-time leading money winner for career lifetime earnings. And that probably means absolutely jack squat to him right about now.

The Intense Stare of Scott Clements has finally met its match with Erik Cajelais.
Taking a page out of the Intense Stare of Scott Clements‘ book “How To Win Tournaments By Scaring The Crap Out Of Your Opponents,” Erik Cajelais of America Jr. has won Event No. 2 (£2,500 Pot Limit Hold’em/Pot Limit Omaha) at the 2009 WSOP Europe.
The 27-year-old unfortunate wearer of Ed Hardy apparel, who looks more like someone you’d see on MMAFix.com than a poker site, won his first WSOP bracelet by scaring the crap out of a final table loaded with multiple bracelet winners, including the always affable Men Nguyen, Hoyt Corkins, Chris Bjorin and Howard Lederer. Cajelais banks £104,677 for the win, or approximately $5.3M US dollars at the current exchange rate.

In our head, at least, this is what Allie Prescott looks like...
Ok we had this post written last night before play started, and since then, all around good-guy
Men “The Master” Nguyen has been eliminated in fourth place in
Event #2 (£2,500 Pot Limit Hold’em/Omaha). See, nice guys never win.
If our remedial math skills are correct, that leaves three remaining in Event #2. As of post time, Erik Cajelais is chip leader. Also remaining are Mats Gavatin and Robin Keston.

Some other news from around London from special correspondent Chris Tessaro of the Hardcore Poker Show:
:: Betfair has graciously backed Brit poker player Paul Zimbler and set him up with his own section at the Empire, as Paul is attempting to play heads-up poker for 80 straight hours to raise money for the Brit version of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Zimbler has been playing all comers, including the likes of Doyle Brunson (who donated 600 pounds cold hard limey cash, or approximately $7 million U.S. American dollars) and Phil Hellmuth. Zimbler has a carefully planned regimen to stay alert (including diet and nutrition), which is different than most Vegas fueled marathon sessions involving meth, coke, etc.
:: We’ve been wrong about her love life before, but rumors abound that Liv Boiree and Allie Prescott are dating. We first got really stoked on this potential hook-up because Allie sounds like a girl’s name and that would’ve been crazy sick hot. Unfortunately, Allie is male. In our imagination, however, she is still female and looks something like Evelyn Kazantzoglou (above and here).
:: Anticipating high stakes action, Empire arranged a private room, dealers, and a cash float of two million pounds. Total amount of high stakes poker played in the aforementioned private room to date? Zero.
:: Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan has a hot blonde girlfriend. See, we told you he wasn’t, well, you know…not that there’s anything wrong with that. Somewhat related, Phil Ivey and durrrr played the largest pot in TV history. [link]
:: Phil Hellmuth planned a big Caesar-like entrance to the Main Event again, but so far London officials have squashed it.

Phil Ivey has more on the line than his £2,500 entry fee in WSOPE Event #2.
Phil Ivey, who likes to gamble, made some big prop bets this year with a number of players (Daniel Negreanu for around $200k, Eli Elezra for around $500k) this year. He came up short at the 2008 World Series of Poker. After the WSOP wrapped, he allegedly told everyone that WSOPE bracelets were part of the bet. Fair enough.
Things are still looking good for Ivey in Event #2 (£2,500 H.O.R.S.E.) of the WSOPE. Yesterday he was chip leader for a good part of the day. Play stopped with 11 remaining, and Ivey was mid-stacked. Only 10 remaining now, and he’s fourth overall with around 114,000.
The current top three big stacks are Howard Lederer (208,500), Yuval Bronshtein (133,500), and Jeffrey Lisandro (125,000).
In related news, Phil Hellmuth busted in 12th.

Finnish poker pro and former "blue steel" poser Patrik Antonius, who we guess is kind of like a Keeley Hazell to chicks and gay dudes, ended today as the Day 1B chip leader at the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event with 76,150 in chips. That amount puts the Flying Finn or Black Lotus or whatever people call him in 5th position overall when grouped with the players from Day 1A.
Close behind Antonius in chips today are American poker blogger Shaun "Not Freddy" Deeb, with 71,825, and Tino Lechich, of Melbourne, Australia, with 71,725.
Adam Junglen, another poker blogger, ended the day with 69,275 in chips, the 4th most of the Day 2B bunch. The 19-year-old Ohioan and noted online player just finished 6th at the EPT Barcelona Open. Rounding out the top 5 from today with 67,025 in chips is Kenny Tran, of Arcadia, CA. Tran will be looking to follow up an impressive summer that saw him go deep in this year’s Main Event and final table in the $50k H.O.R.S.E. championship.
Also worth mentioning, Scotsman Gerry Kane, a male nurse, or in other words, a man doing a woman’s job, is stacked at 66,675, and he just may be our pick to win the Main Event for the sole reason that we came across some ridiculous YouTube videos he made to pump himself up, we assume, for London’s big event. Watch them below and after the jump and see if you can spot RawVegas.tv’s very own Andrea Tiede in the first one.
Other players still in the mix at the end of today include Jon "Pearljammer" Turner (60,975), Daniel Negreanu (60,900), Jamie Gold (53,400), Theo Jorgensen (50,825), Johnny Chan (47,250), Tony G (44,750), Justin "ZeeJustin" Bonomo (39,000), Isabelle Mercier (32,400) and a bunch of other players you can read about here.
Play starts up Wednesday at 2pm London time at The Empire with only the players from Day 1A, including 11-time WSOP bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth. The Day 1B group will return to the tables on Thursday with both groups merging on Friday.
OFFICIAL NUMBERS ANNOUNCED:
The official numbers from the WSOPE are in and only 362 players entered, about 400 short of what they had hoped for and about that much less than what the EPT Grand Final drew in Monte Carlo. Only the top 36 players will be playing for a share of the £3,620,000 prize pool, and BetFair had to toss in £56,000 of its own money to ensure the top prize was an even £1,000,000.
