Whales: New Poker Show from Weeds Creator

Whales probably won't have an uber-milf like Mary-Louise Parker, but it has our attention nonetheless.

If you watch Weeds regularly, you’ll notice copious poker references (World Poker Tour, PokerStars, etc.).

So it’s not totally out of left field that the show’s creator, Jenji Kohan, and executive producer, Matthew Salsberg, are now working on a poker comedy for Showtime called Whales.

From Deadline:

The half-hour revolves around a group of brilliant and quirky young people, some of them Harvard and MIT graduates, who move to Las Vegas to live in a lavish apartment while pursuing the $10 million prize at the World Series of Poker. Kohan and Salsberg, who is an avid poker player, are writing and executive producing for Lionsgate TV where Kohan is based with an overall deal.

Can’t be worse than Tilt? Or The Grand? Or High Roller? Or Deal? Or Lucky You? Right? Right?

Before everyone starts freaking out, let’s take a closer look at the fine print. Jenji Kohan has a production company based at at Lionsgate and this is only one of the projects in development under her overall deal. As far as I can tell, although Showtime has come aboard as a network partner, there is no pilot commitment or episode order as of yet. So it’s a long way from the screen.

That said, I for one remain optimistic about this project based on the writing talent involved and the fact that Salsberg is actually an avid player.

As Change100 points out, you can’t have a TV show without a TV distribution deal. Until that’s in place, you’ve just got ideas and video cameras.

Jenji Kohan has created a great American comedy drama called Weeds. This is the great show. I like the plot and I watch this show daily. But I have not seen this new show. Is it as mush interesting and exciting as Weeds?

Weeds is a hilarious, clever, entertaining and sometimes a little sad tv series. I am a big fan of this show. And its my favorite show.
