The biggest story today at the 2010 World Cup is the crumbling of the French army navy entire military culture soccer team in what has become a huge scandal in their home country:

“I told them they could no longer be heroes for our children. They have destroyed the dreams of their countrymen, their friends and supporters,” said French sports minister Roselyne Bachelot. “The government has to intervene as the reputation of France is at stake in this case.”

We won’t touch that irony-ridden statement by Bachelot, a woman (who is their sports minister, the French sports minister, and a woman), but suffice to say that things are bad for Ribery, Henry, Anelka, Evra and the rest of the disgraced team that threw a temper tantrum on Sunday and went on strike (the French? on strike? never…), refusing to train.

Either way, the bad news for the French means good news for Uruguay and Mexico, who advance out of Group A in the number 1 and 2 spots, respectively. What this also means is that we have our first points awarded in the Wicked Chops 2010 (WSOP) World Cup Bracket.

During the later set of games, Argentina defeated a tenacious Greek team 2-0 and Nigeria settled for a 2-2 draw with South Korea to send the Koreans through and the Africans home.

While we are still a long way from being able to get a really clear picture, there are already eight front-runners – all tied for 1st by benefit of picking Uruguay, Mexico, Argentina or South Korea to advance out of the group stage (click to embiggen):

There are still plenty of games to be played and brackets to be decided, but these eight have to be considered early favorites as there’s 12 people tied for 9th place (including WCP Entity The Addict), math math math tied for 21 and math math math at 119th or worse. As of right now, here are the prizes for the winners, whoever they may be:

  • 3 month membership to DeepStacks University, with $99 activation fee waived
  • PokerVT membership (duration TBD)
  • Skullcandy headphones (and possibly some other Skullcandy swag, still waiting on the box to arrive)
  • ESPN gear in some form or another – TBD
  • Soccerati t-shirt
  • PokerRoad t-shirt
  • RawVegas.tv hat
  • More prizes TBA, maybe, possibly…

Stay tuned for more updates and make sure to check out Soccerati for 2010 World Cup updates.

Looking at the leaderboard….there are several double entries/people with more than one email (yet still using same name)… Just curious if this was allowed?

sure, ESPN allows it as part of their Bracket Predictor. However, I imagine we’ll only let one entry per person receive a prize.
